There was talk a while back about doing pump of the month. No one started it So I will try. I can not guarantee I will do it every month. This month we will do bennett 300 and 500 series. We will also include Bennett 76 and 77. I will start with info for 300 and 500 but post your 76 and 77s any time.

The 300 series included 371,372,373,383(not including Gulf)and were made from 1938-1941. The 371 has a computing Veeder Root, 373 is a twin, 373 is a non-computing clock unit and the 383 is a non-computing Veeder Root.

The 500 series included 541,542,543,545( not including Gulf)and were made from 1939-1941. There was also the 546,566,567 with the sight glass at the top in place of the ad glass. the 541 has a computing Veeder Root, 542 is a twin,543 has a non-computing Veeder Root,545 is a non-computing clock unit, 545 is a computing unit, 566 is computing with a hose retractor and 567 is non-computing with hose retractor and was made from 1940-1941.

The two series look the same but not many parts are interchangable. The frame are the biggest difference. I will post several pictures of the differences. We will start with pictures of the frames and on-off levers. The on-off lever is the only way to tell the two series apart with out opening the door. Also note in the frame pictures the door latching systems. If I do not note it the firt picture will be the 300 series and second 500 series.

The 300 has for hinges on each side the 500 has three.

Some 300s used the 500 style reset handle, first pic is the 300 and looks kind of like a G&B handle.

There were East coast and West coast light units. The west coast have explosion proof with the glass jars and East just had light reflectors. I only have pics of West coast.

The Eary 300 nozzle receivers were cast iron with bolt on the inside. Later ones and 500 series screws on the outside.

The ID tags are different and another way to tell the two series apart with out opening the door. That is if you can read it on a unrestored pump.

The hose outlets were the same but there were 3/4 and 1 inch sizes. Als found a 90 degree one most were a 45 degree. There was also a safty shut off style.

The 300 series faces were flat and used a steel mounting pan. They were aluminum. I do have one flat porcelain set and seen one other set. The 500 used a one piece face with rolled sides. They came in aluminum and porcelain. The 546,566 and567 used both styles of faces.

Here are picture of the twin parts. The twin is basically two single pumps joined together. The bases have a flat spot to join the and the reset is on the hose side. These pictures are from a 542.

The Bennett 76 and 77 came in an early and later version with both versions having a two or four ad glass top. These were also sold with SSE 76, 77 ID tags (Service Station Equipment). They were made from 1935 to 1939. The early model has a external visi guage and a one piece casted face bezel with the trim part chrome plated. Some of the real early models had a cast iron top, the rest a pot metal top. The later model has a sight glass in the face with cut outs in the trim area and separate stainless trim that fit in place. The 76 is a computing pump with a Veeder Root and the 77 is a non-computing pump with a clock unit. The early model had a different reset handle the the later. These pumps also had east ans west coast light units like the 300 and 500 series. There was also a special face bezel made for Sohio. I do not have a lot of pictures of these pumps but do have an early and late model.
