I think my nerves are still shot a day plus later. I might have to go get me another one of those glasses of beer.
There are still plenty of deals to be found. I bought this neat sign, yesterday from a friend at the flea market. Only a 20 minute drive.

Looks like the 20 minute trip paid off , that's a neat sign. There is a few little weekly auctions in my area and repop and fantasy signs are being mixed with old stuff here as well. I am with you, I no longer waste my time , going to auctions that conduct these style auctions, its deliberate deception , no better than the e bay sellers that mislead and play games and are being dishonest.
I like SINCLAIR and old American made stuff ... No china items.

Henry as an experienced winter driver from north of the 49th parallel I laughed to myself while reading your description of the conditions but then I saw your hubcap-i must say I have never seen anything like that. Must have been the perfect combination of ice snow/slurry, temperatures and salt de-icing compound. I do like your flange purchase. I have seen the same phenomenon at local auctions here with real, repop and fantasy items blended and people paying 500 for signs that you could find online for 25-50 bucks in a heart beat. And the auctioneers were no help either.

I lived in New England for 15 years before moving to Va. and am very experienced at bad weather driving. This trip had one tense moment and one dangerous time. Tense is driving several miles up hair pin turns, in the mountains, trying to keep speed and running up on the plow before you make it to the top. Started loosing traction,{tense}.
Dangerous was running up on white out conditions at a steep grade, going a little to fast, and sliding sideways uphill in the wrong lane. There was that brief few seconds when my mind and body said, this van could flip. Later the beer sure helped.
Crazy was when I got back into Va. it was a beautiful sunny day.

As long as the beer is after the trip! Yes a static picture never does justice to the conditions seen. And mountains are sure a different beast than straight prairie roads. I am scheduled for a few mountain pass traverses this week myself. I hope my driving conditions are more conducive to safe driving than yours were.

Some on 50 but most further south on 250. Ignorance is bliss. I just knew not to take 33 again. Did that the night before.

All of this said, I feel that $800 for that big Independent Quality Service sign was a decent price. That is a very unusual sign.
Good oil cans don't wait for people, people wait for them.

Rt 50 is bad enough in the summer. Driven it many times for the past 40 years, summer and winter. I almost didn't go to an auction in Terra Alta just north of Grafton WV a few weeks ago. I chose the northern route instead of going 50. The pumps and pump doors went crazy cheap, you just never know about an auction. No internet bidders though. Brady

Can't believe someone paid $400 for that phony Dino sign and the Texaco Aviation Oils as well-whatever that went for. Auctions have been crazy lately and I'm seeing more phony items mixed with real items and many auctioneers saying nothing. Scott B.

The Texaco Aviation was sold with a real 250 to 400 dollar Texaco keyhole sign for 1200.
