Is this sign a repro or original? I believe it to be a repro as I have been told the grommet holes should line up above the G and E in the word Genuine. Also there are no markings on the sign from the sign company or is not marked Property of Ford Motor Company. The third thing is the text and color do not seem to be right to me.

Anyone else have any thoughts or comments.

Keith

Repo....as someone who handles reproduction porcelain everyday, that is unmistakenly a new sign. Reproduction signs chip completely different than originals do. Plus, the new Ford signs aren't the deep cobalt-purplish blue, but more of a Navy.

Is "Veribrite Signs Chicago" on a sign a pretty good indicator of original?

THERE ARE OTHER FORD OVALS THAT HAVE CHATANOOGA,TN PRINTED ON THEM........IN THIS DAY OF REPRODUCTIONS WHEN I BUY AFTER I LOOK AT THE CONDITION THE NEXT IMPORTANT THINK IS IT ORIGINAL THE SIGN MAKER NAME IS MORE IMPORTANT NOW THAT IT EVER WAS.

WALKER MADE MOST OF THE CAR DEALER SIGNS LOCATED IN DETROIT MI 1925-1960.
VERIBRITE SIGNS CHICAGO 1915-1965
INGRAM RICHARDSON BEAVER FALLS PA 1901-1960
THEY USED SEVERAL NAMES IR ON PUMP PLATES.
AND AS THE SIGN COMPANIES MERGED THERE NAME CHANGED.
I WAS TOLD THAT SUM DISHONEST SIGN SELLER WENT AS FAR AS STAMPING SIGN MAKERS NAMES ON REPRODUCTIONS BUT I HAVE NOT SEEN ONE.
KNOW WHO YOUR BUYING FROM.....

How is the chipping different on an original versus a repro?

I think everyone could benefit from your answer... Especially when we are at the notorious flea market and they have "this old sign that's beat up" for sale.
Thanks
Mark

Rex,
Thanks for the great info, esp. for a newbie like me. Are the companies you listed pretty much most of the major ones? I'm going to print this info and put it in my "sign notebook" that stays in my Suburban.
Thanks again!

Mark...a repo sign will immediately chip to white that will look and feel ceramic...that's the best way I can explain it.
