Does anyone know why there are two different varieties of the mobilgas script top? The letter a is different on one than the other. Does one bring more value or rarity? Were they different manufacturers? Just curious to know and are there any other script tops besides the mobilgas, mobilgas special, the conoco 3, and the sunoco 2?

Those are the ones. Now there has been others who have made the script tops for their own use with different lettering, but they do not have the plastic for them. We use to manufacture the lenses for about 10-13 years and supply many of the wholesalers. There is a difference in some of the Mobil tops though with the lettering, more square on the I will call odd ones. I do not know where they originated but they are original though, just from a different part of the country. There is no plastic for them that is reproduced though. The Sunoco only had one set of lenses and the metal cover that was placed over the Dynafuel was the difference of the two.

Regarding the Mobilgas tops and "a's". The differences in the "a" is due to age. The open "a" is the older one. In advertising it changed to the closed version around 1949 IIRC, and pump plates received the closed ones from 1946 (except some in the Magnolia territory where they appear to have been used in parallel - not dated so hard to know)... globes kept the open "a" until the new flat logo appeared in 1962. br Claes

The only tops I know of that were used are the Mobilgas and Mobilgas Special (Some letters differed as discussed). The Sonoco Dynafuel(The Dynafuel was blocked off with a cover if used as Sunoco only).3 Conoco tops Ethyl,Ntane, and Demand. The Demand being the less common of all. They are great pumps in all brands!

I've seen all the different varieties of the tops except a sunoco with the blanking plate over the dynafuel, seems everyone wanted the dynafuel.

If you look close, you can see the block out plates on this pump.
