Hello, I am hoping that someone out there can help me with my questions concerning Sinclair Pump Plates. I have a poor photo of a early West Jordan gas station that started off as a Covey Station 1956. In 1957 Covey was bought out by Sinclair and turned into a Sinclair station.In the photo the pump on the left I believe it would have had a green door and would have had a Sinclair HC Gasoline pump plate. I cannot make anything out on the pump to the right. I am sure it was for ethyl. what kind of pump plate did they used 1957-1962 for ethyl? Would the door have been red could any of the below images had been used the ethyl?
Any help appreciated would there had been a pump plate or decal for the photos that are of globes?

To the best of my knowledge, Sinclair never had an HC round pump plate. The smallest original round HC sign I am aware of is the 24 inch size. They did use a lot of decals on pumps back in the day. The only three original pump plates from Sinclair I have seen are the Dino logo with the word Gasoline, the logo with the red lettered word diesel and the green lettered word diesel. I heard of a fourth plate but I never saw one. I do not have my gas pump restoration book handy but I would think in your 1957-1962 time frame that they would have been using for gasoline the HC, the three Power-X series of globes and the Dino and Dino Supreme globes. The Dino and supreme could have been used with a pump plate. The others most likely would have decals. There is a square 12 and 14 inch HC sign that was used on truck doors to the best of my knowledge but not on pumps. I have seen HC and Power-X decals before. There is also the newer HC globe that does not have the red ball center.

As per the book, the Sinclair Gasoline with the Ethyl logo as in your picture was used from 1947-1953 with a matching decal. The Power-X you pictured was used from 1953-1955, also with a matching decal. Your red ball HC globe was replaced in 1955 with the green lettered HC globe. 1957-1962 the green lettered HC, Power X super fuel with different decals, Power X over 100 octane, Dino with a gasoline pump plate, Power X gasoline with a gasoline pump plate and in 1962 the Dino Supreme came out with the pump plate.

From '57-'59 the regular grade would have used the new logo H-C globe. It has a white background with light green H-C, and red Sinclair in block letters.
From '59-'61 they used a similar globe but Sinclair was in italics.
Pumps would have been green with white doors. They used decals that said High Test Quality, Regular Price.

Sometime in '61 the regular grade was renamed Dino. The pumps would have been white with green doors, and the familiar Dino globe was used. The Dino logo "gasoline" porcelain pump signs were used.

The premium grade was Power X The Super Fuel from '55-59.
Pumps would have been red with white doors. The decals said Super High Test, No Price Penalty. They used the Power X globe you pictured.

From '59-61 the premium grade was Power X Over 100 Octane.
The pumps were painted the same as the Power X Super Fuel that preceded the Over 100. The Over 100 Octane globe is quite different.

In '61-'62 the premium grade was Power X.
The pumps were white with red doors. They used the Dino logo Power X globe, and the porcelain Dino logo "gasoline" pump plate.

In '62 the Dino logo Power X globes were replaced with Dino Supreme globes.

I highly recommend anyone researching old photos or doing historically accurate restorations on pumps should get a copy of PCM's Guide To Gas Pump Restoration, and any of the Gas Pump Globe books or CD by Henderson and Benjamin.

I'll see if I can find a picture of the three versions of Power X globes.
