I am going to an petroliana auction on Saturday and there is a fire chief plate. How can I ensure it is a real one. Beside the obvious. I figured out the sky chief and got a real one but the fire chief ones deceiving. it there certain date to shy away from. I would not buy one with the date conveniently rusted away. Is there any markings or font mistakes? I searched on here and studied pictures of known reproductions but need more expert help on this. Thanks, still learning some basics too costly to buy fakes. Here is a pix of it.

Most of the reproductions are dated 1990 and have a green colored back, if I remember right? They are also a lot more flimsy. You can tell right away when holding one.

Mark is right,it looks real. Most repops are dated 1980s and 90s.Also from 1940ish on there is no black around the T in the star.Heres a new reproduction from Vics 66.

Here are two real ones on the right and a 90's repro on the left. The repro has a white back, real ones can have white or greenish.

There are other repro's that are easy to spot because they are tin and a smaller size.

Any sign you are considering, look down at the bottom, if either the bottom right or left is chipped away, this is good giveaway someone has take a repro sign and hammered away on the corners where the date is to make you think it is old.

Never buy a sign where the bottom of the sign is chipped away, it was probably done yesterday.

I disagree.
While damage along a lower edge can be a warning sign, it certainly doesn't mean all signs with lower edge damage are repros.

Gas Pump Heavens also reproduces them. Its printed along the bottom of the plate. And they're easy to tell even if the text across the bottom has been removed. They are noticeably heavier than original plates.
