Paul (tbirdgas) sent this original Rainbow Ethyl gas pump door decal (1940s???) to me about a year or so ago and I finally got it installed on a piece of metal that was a free scrap piece at my buddy's fabrication shop! I cleaned it up and DE-burred the edges, drilled the holes and painted it in gloss black on the front and flat black on the back. (I ended up painting it and stripping it clean 2 times before the third time painting it because it was not right each time because black is a b!atc#) I wondered how well it would detach from the paper since it had a couple of cracks in the decal from being brittle from age and the backing paper had some oil staining on it but it really worked out beautifully with a lot of very careful work and time! I also called a buddy who has been a auto painter for about50 years, for his advice on decals and it helped! He is the person who painted my parking meter with the 1970 Boss 302 Mustang stripes with 70 Mustang Grabber Blue paint. I think I will be clear coating over it and put metal grommets in the holes that I drilled so I can mount it to a wall with out messing up the paint. I also plan to attach the section of the backer paper that has printing on it stating the name of the decal printer that was here in the Spokane area. I'm about $10 into it, only because of the paint and stripper, and I'm very happy to be able to, finally, nicely display, in my collection, this original piece of Rainbow!!! A BIG Thanx to Paul, Justin and Butch!!!

That looks really cool, good use of an old decal!
I've clearcoated a lot of (new) decals, I've been told / noticed a few things. You can get edge effects where the clear starts to get under the edges of the sticker and lifts. Good to put some light coats on first. I've also had good luck polishing and buffing the clear over the sticker but you have to put it on thick. I'm not sure how those old decals will react to clear?

Came out nice. I have done the same with several original Shell and a few Hancock decals. A great way to display an original decal. Putting the paper backer on the back is a good idea, I done the same on most of mine.

Well, the black paint is all screwed up now, around the edges, after putting clear coat on! It is ok on top of the decal but the gloss black paint (cheap Walmart stuff) did not mix well with the clear coat (Rustoleum high quality clear coat) and gave it a wrinkled effect that I'm just going to have to live with. I was afraid of this because I can't strip it now that the decal is laid down. UGH Oh well, lesson learned for the next one I do!

9 True's Oil co./Rainbow items displayed in the Shoppe! Unless your looking, the messed up paint does not grab your eye too much. Now, I need to get my hands on a sign and more oil cans! Thanx for the kind words!!
