I bought this can a couple years ago I believe... I still have yet to see another like it. Kind of oddball design, but what you see on the outside is a paper type of label. I can tell that there is something underneath it... but do I dare remove the label? What if the ad underneath it is ruined... or what if the ad below it is a new discovery for Cities cans?

...I wouldn't do a thing to it...
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

I'd leave it too, and think and dream of just what might be under it.

If you've never seen another like it, I would certainly leave it as is although the temptation to see what's underneath would be great. Obviously where would you find another label once that one comes off in pieces? It looks pretty fragile. The colors I do see showing look more like Texaco colors than any C.S. colors I've seen....like a red-ish color and light green. Maybe it's my monitor or they're faded too...? It might go either way, could be a new discovery Cities can, or it could be a period "mop and shine" or home cleaning product container from any manufacturer that the can company sold to C.S. and the company re-purposed with a paper label. Back in the day not a lot was wasted so paper wrapping a can originally for something else wouldn't be out of the question IMO. Darin

Ahhhhh just go ahead. What is there to lose? It's only some 'ole can. It's not like it's a collectors item or anything. On a more serious note, does it feel as if there is any separation between the two labels?

Well, I can tell you this---The can shape does not resemble any known types of old Cities Service cans, so the risk is pretty high. I removed the label on the can I had because it was so soaked up, it was literally falling off the can. I was very lucky! Theres an easy solution---just sell me the can and put it in the mail--TEMPTATION GONE! I won't take the label off either.

Are you guys thinking,
1) that Cities maybe bought up a bunch of cans from some off beat product and used them to save a penny. Putting their label on them? Or 2) this was some other Cities product that got re-labeled?
Based on Kevin's statement about the can shape not matching any other cities can, it would seem that #1 would be the case.
It's a dead heat in the poll.
