Approximately how much does a 30" double-sided porcelain sign weigh?

You know, I've been handling pumps and signs for over twenty years. I can estimate pump weights for shipping. I've never had a person ask for the weight of a sign? Joe, you are kidding, right? This can't be a serious question? Most of us on this site, are willing to help with practical knowledge. If it is a valid request, kindly try using a little common sense? Paul www.severngaspumps.com

I would bet Joe is trying to figure what shipping cost might be if he buys a 30" sign. Don't chew him out too badly Paul.

Geez Paul

Maybe the sign is up on a wall ? Maybe he's looking for weight/price from a photo.

It was a serious question. I had no clue how much it would cost to ship 3 signs because I did not know how much they might weigh, but now I do and I know what it will cost to ship. I wish I had decades of experience with all thing petroliana-related, but I don't and I am trying to learn with help from this forum. Thanks for the kind answers.

I was not chewing him out but simply stating that if used, a little common sense can go a long way. I read way too many questions on this site that should never be asked. If he is trying to figure the shipping rate, simply ask the seller the weight? Why run it through here when the answer is easily determined from the source. Dick would have had a great time with this. Maybe I should take a break from the madness? Paul www.severngaspumps.com

Paul,

You are forgetting the adage when dealing with the less knowledgeable, "There are no stupid questions".

Now if he'd said "I've got three signs I want to ship but they are 20 feet up the wall and I don't have a ladder or a screwdriver to remove the screws and my scale is broken anyway, can you help me out with what they might weigh?" Is it still unreasonable to answer?

BTW, thanks to Advertologist for responding with an answer as the only 30" sign I have currently has a 9" hole in it so any weight I gave would be inaccurate.... LOL.

Paul, It's not just that. I take offense to all the newbies who have come to this site......asked a million questions, when if they thought about it, could figure it out. Some then debate the answers. Once they have gotten what they wanted, then have faded away never to be heard from again. I have vivid memories of several in the last year. They bring northing to this site, offer no help and are basically a drain on the time of anyone who offer. I guess I'm tired of trying to help people who will not help themselves first. I have had two phone calls, this morning from Old Gas Members who agree with me.....I guess I hit a nerve? Paul www.severngaspumps.com

I guess it's personality Paul.

I handle questions all the time and the question above is innocuous enough to never elicit a similar reaction as your post.

Paul (gasmansgp), I understand and agree with you on the points you have raised. Lazyness, coupled with stupid questions and copious amounts of selfishness is more than abundant now a days.

With the advent of the internet and google there is absolutely no need for stupid questions...in my humble opinion.

I take great comfort in knowing that there is still at least four us out there that hold a similar opinion.

Paul,
I only post on here occasionally and most of the times it is to ask a question. You made reference to the fact that a lot of newbies only ask questions and do not offer anything.
Being a newbie is a double edged sword. I would like to add more but do not feel I have the knowledge being a newbie.
I offered an answer once about a Texaco sign trying to convince myself I had gotten smarter by perusing this site. Of course I got the answer wrong and was quickly reminded to not give any information as opposed to giving wrong information.
I will always remember something my machine shop teacher told me over 30yrs. ago "There is no such thing as a stupid question, just dumb mistakes".

It is baffling and ironic when you guys go on these mini-tirades and start being what I'll call 'combative' about giving out information as if there is some line a question has crossed.

I wish the OP had asked how much a service station weighed, I'm sure we'd never hear the end of it .... LOL!

Guys, I didn't expect to start anything with my response. I do not apologize for my remark, as it is how I feel. My opinions are my own, as I always mention. We have all been Newbies and most of us veterans came in under Dick Bennett's watchful eye. He was tough! It takes a pair to post on this site. I think every new person needs to participate. Only asking them to do some things [for yourself] before you jump on here asking for the world. And Paul.....mini-tirades, combative, really???? That sure doesn't describe me......must be someone else? Moving on.... Paul www.severngaspumps.com

I think its important to remember that the people who are starting out in this hobby are its future and it would be a shame to discourage them with a unnecessary comment to a question.
