Does anyone have any recommendations on a place that does very nice porcelain sign restorations, and have they used them there selves?

Van Kannells if I spelled it correctly. They have done work for me and for others on the forum. I recommend them without reservation. Color differences are due to lighting. You can find them through Google.

http://www.vankannelsignrestoration.com/Just remember they do not restore Porcelain with Porcelain, though they do excellent work, it's done with automotive paint and clearcoat.

when this type of work is done, is the entire sign painted over, or just the damaged/repaired area? And then the paint somehow blended into the remaining porcelain.

It depends on the amount of damage. It could be a small repair that's blended into the existing artwork and then the whole sign is clear coated. Sometimes you get new artwork on an old piece of metal. Forgery ? You decide.

Cheesemans wife does great work I'm told and cheaper than most. I have never had her do work. I decided I would enjoy as is,update where I could should the chance to do so arise, and the funds permitted. cheese pit stop.com--that other site.

I talked with Van Kannels at Iowa Gas a few years back. The thing I didn't like is they will not spot repair a sign without clearing the whole thing. This was a deal breaker for me. They did nice work though.

The clearcoat is the down side, although I suppose one could color sand and hand buff it. I left the back side with the same amount of damage "as is" so if I wanted, I could just rotate it and enjoy a different perspective.
Mine had a pretty good kink in it and I was surprised at hoe little damage and porcelain loss there was to the back side as they straightened it completely.

Don't expect to resell it for a profit after.

I am putting this in my own collection, I don't have intentions on selling it. So when a item is bent up and missing a majority of its porcelain or original beauty I guess at that time a restoration may be acceptable or not? It may come down to how rare the item is.

it is personal preference, but even a rare sign will rarely sell for the amount spent on a restoration,
