Shop Talk member "Fred" found a great image hosting service set up perfectly for users to post their images on Shop Talk. You can upload images directly from your computer to their server for free. When it is uploaded, you get a screen with easy copy and paste code that is ready to go for Shop Talk.
This is a well thought out system. I'm proud that their site is designed and run right here in Missouri.
You can register there and get nice extra features or upload without even registering.
http://www.imageshack.us/

Here is an example of an image uploaded by me. The image is a thumbnail image linked to a larger image if the viewer wants it. All the code for that is generated by the image host for a near-no-brainer for users.

That's a pic of a container I have in my collection. If anyone can tell me what it is and what goes on the top, please let me know.

Image hosting for Oldgas.com has surpassed 175 megs of user uploaded images on our server. Continuing at the current rate, this will end up costing about $30 per month by mid-2005. We love the images! Hosting them on this new option will cut our costs and make it easier for you.

Hi Jim,

This looks great, went to the web site and it appears easy so far. One question, when I browse to get my picture it is stored on my C: drive. Not being a computer wizard like many of you, do I need to be concerned about other info being made available to anyone else out there? Maybe a dumb question but want to make sure.

WOW, I just posted a picture in Showcase under petro pumper. http://www.imageshack.us/
Image posting just got easier, ANYONE can do it.
This is going to set OLDGAS on FIRE with everyone posting pictures.

I was just about ready to paste in when my PC shut down. I rebooted, clicked on their site, clicked on MY IMAGES, highlighted the image I wanted and copied it for pasteing.

WOW so easy

Wads,
Your question about computer security is not a dumb one. You should always be concerned.
I recommend:
* Make sure you always have the latest Windows Updates installed that involve security.
* Enable your Windows XP Firewall or install a Norton, McAfee or other good firewall.
* Set your Internet Explorer security settings concerning Active-X Controls to Prompt or if that is not a choice to Disable. When you get a pop-up asking if you want to approve an Active-X Control, you need to decide if you trust the site you are on. Many sites use safe scripting, including Oldgas.com to enable helpful features. But unscrupulous sites can snoop and plant bad things. You should know when somebody is running such a script and be able to decide even though the pop-up prompts are a pain.

Image Shack runs a script that enables Google context sensitive ads. That is how they make their money to pay for the free image hosting. It is harmless. Oldgas.com uses the same type of scripting to run the real-time eBay listings and Google ads on our site with no risk at all for users.

DOC, That's it, I'm staying up all night to take pictures (LOL)!! Signs, cans, maps, paper items, globes, bottle racks, blotters.
Finally, I can stop bothering people to post pictures for me. Now I need a BOTW so I can post it myself. Thanks to all those that posted for me in the past.

Hey Jim, just wondering if these photos posted through this new listing server, will still be available for viewing in say 6months? I noticed that sometimes when I go back looking at a post, some of the images have dissapeared. Hubba's are some of the ones that I've noticed. I thought this was caused by the hosting server not retaining them for a long period of time. Any ideas?

Won't this be cool! (if it works) I never post any pics because I never want to bother anyone to post them for me.
If this works it is a picture of the Seattle Express... my new truck (gift to myself after I sold the pool store) and the trailer I bought from Dave Bowman for the move.

Don,
The documentation on their site says they watch the number of times an image is viewed. They promise to keep an image on their server for one year after the last time it is viewed. So if the image is viewed once after 11 months, it gets another year of hosting, at least.

How long will the site last? They depend on earning income from the Google ads on their site. Hopefully that will earn enough to keep it going. I'd expect ImageShack to develop other income producing business in the future. Not to mention the site is based in St. Louis, Missouri where all the sharpest nerds hang out. lol

Well, I guess it's ALMOST idiot-proof. It's really only a small 3" hand mirror....not the mirror that ate Cleveland!!!. Guess checking the image size is a good idea also...........

Hey Richard, the same thing happened to me on the Gilmore post, so I went back, and copied the "thumbnail" url, came back and posted that in place of my original url. I'm sure there is an easier way?

Give me some warning, Don! I leaned forward so fast when I saw the auto paint neon that I hit my head on the monitor. That is really cool. Where did you see that?

I'm lovin' this, seeing you guys whipping those images out of your computer and onto the Web. Can you feel the power?

Way to go, Mac!
Using the thumbnail code makes the image an efficient size for the page and allows viewers who are interested to click on it to get a bigger picture with more detail. Using thumbnails makes the pages load faster for guys who don't have broadband and it eliminates the sideways scrolling for pages with "larger than the screen" pictures.

To get thumbnails to appear, copy and paste the code that is next to:
"Hotlink a clickable thumbnail on a forum or message board!" (on the screen after your upload).
To upload your images go to: http://imageshack.us/

What a dumbass!!! I guess I'm the only one to take something simple and screw it up. I clicked on the thumbnail but there was no "copy" so I took the address at the top of the page. But that is a link to the site. I'll play around with it some more later.

All of these pictures are driving me crazy!!!

As a sage once said, Post a picture for a man and he'll post it once, show him how to post pictures and he'll post them forever. (or maybe that was about fishing?)

This site is gonna get HUGE with all of these new photo posting pros. Look at how big the showcases are already since this new found posting prowess.

Keep those posting those pictures gasoholics, they're great!!!

For those of you who are struggling with resizing your images so they fit on a computer screen:
Check in your camera box for software that came with it on CD-ROM. Many camera makers bundle free software with the camera that resizes images pretty well.
Another option is to buy or download a graphics editor like Photoshop Elements, PhotoImpact or Jasc Paint Shop Pro. You can get a copy of the version 8 of Jasc Paint Shop Pro on Amazon.com for less than $30. Version 9 is out now with a couple more features for $120. Version 8 is all most people need. Search for "Paint Shop Pro" using the form at the bottom of this page to search Amazon.

Most users have 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768 screen resolution. Part of the screen is taken up by your browser's buttons and bars and part by the stuff other than your image on the Web page. This leaves a limited space for images or the viewer is forced to scroll sideways or up/down to see the image. By resizing to no more than 600 pixels wide and 400 pixels tall, nearly all viewers can see the complete image without scrolling. Plus dial-up users appreciate more efficient images so they don't have to wait so long for them to load.

Hello Jim,

Thank you for sharing Imageshack with the readers of Oldgas.com. I am a total un-savvy computer person, so when I was looking for a way to post some pictures, I never would have known whether it was good or bad; all I knew was that it was free and easy to do.

Speaking of which why I posted picutures in the first place: I am still looking for somewhere to find a sign for my "parts manual holder" (Posting on 11/12/04 @ 11:29 AM). I received one idea, but any help/thougths would be greatly appreciated Thank you, and have a great day!

Fred

That first picture you posted was a real turkey, but the second one was a beauty!

Oops I take it back, that islander photo is HUGE, have to re-size that one. (Never mind that was elcamino trying to post)

I like that Frontier pump!

Edit to add the [img] opening and closing tags to the image link so that they appear on this page.

When you upload an image to ImageShack, the next screen shows code for several different uses. For Shop Talk, you need to select one of two code choices that say they are for "Forums." The code required will include: [img]

If the code includes: It will not work. That is html code which is not processed for security reasons.

Click on "Copy URL" next to one of the forum choices. Say "Yes" to the pop-up message to copy to clipboard. Put your cursor in the Shop Talk message box and press the "Control" key and then the letter "V" at the same time. That will place the code for forums in your message and your image will appear after you submit the form. Click on "Help!" at the bottom of this page for more image help.

You are right. They have changed the choices on the page after your upload to ImageShack. The "Copy URL" link is gone and an additional option for forums has appeared.

The correct code choice for a full size image to appear in your Shop Talk message will start with [img] not [img=
That second option and

Hi Bud,
Congratulations on posting images by yourself!

Your attempt to post a second image in the same message failed because the second image had a combination of two kinds of code. Only UBB code that has will work. Any html code like
Your second image had both UBB and html in it, so it would not work. When uploading images to ImageShack.com, copy the line of code for Forums(1) not for Websites.

Remember when posting more than one image, put a blank space between images or put them on a separate line. I recommend posting four or less images in a single message submission. Post additional images in another reply to the same topic.

Just trying to post pic's.Hope it works ok. the tokiem 36b done in Gimore is waiting for the new gilmore 15" red lion globe. It just came today . Thanks popogas. I hooked up a sump pump to the site glass manifold so the site glass spinners work when I turn on the lights. look's really cool. The g-b 176 has been in my dad's garage since I was little. that's about 40 years ago. He gave it to me so I did it in polly. Next time I will show the mobil pump that I just finished for my son in law's b-day Mike

After you copy & paste the link, make sure there is a AFTER.
