That generation had hard lives. They lived through the great depression then sent their son's off to World War 2. They didn't have the government social safety net, so when their jobs disappeared they often packed up their families and moved to wherever they could eek out a living.

I can remember many old photos where a woman of that stature would be married to a skinny guy. Stern faces with few smiles. Times could be tough, but they somehow pulled through them.

Maybe she is the (widowed) owner of the station...it looks like a man's coat she is wearing. Or at least it's a coat too big for her. And just looking at her face, I bet she was a sweet looking round-faced young woman, like the face Betty Boop was modeled on. IMHO

FWIW, and so that Nicole or anyone else doesn't think bad on me, my only point in this was that she was standing right next to the word Ethyl. At the moment, I just found it a little silly. That's all.

I have a large newspaper ad dated Aug. 31st, 1928; touting the "New Partnership" between Tydol and Ethyl....
It could be, she was a "young" Model in '28???????

I didn't think the joke was bad We have all see the photo of Ethyl drinking from the pump...Lol I just was wondering what would make a woman of her age pose so proudly. My guess is wife, owner or mother. And looking at faces and wondering what they looked like younger is an occupational hazard!

Judging by the globes, that picture was taken in the early post war years. Although my grandmother didn't look like that, she wore coats like that. That's how older women dressed and posed for pictures back then.
