This sign is coming up at a nearby auction on Saturday is it original? This is the only picture I have of it.

That is a 2 gallon can. The ad for the auction stated it is a sign. Well that solved that issue quick enough. That is the only petroliana item at that auction.

The auction listed it as a sign but it is a 2 gallon can. What is the value and what year could it be.

Based on uniform, maybe 40's. More likely 50's. Value is minimal in that condition. They come up quite often on ebay in nice shape for 40-50 bucks. Sometimes even less. Don't touch it. If you really want one. Watch ebay and you'll get a much nicer one.

Average condition isn't a bunch on that Defender, maybe 20-25 for someone who doesn't have the can yet even at most shows. As cool as the graphic is the can isn't scarce. They come up on eBay all the time and only the nicest ones bring 60-100 average. Only someone not familiar with the can pays any higher than that.

My theory on Defender is that with WW2 perhaps there was a support campaign, that might explain the numerous cans seen? Anyone have an insight?

I was only initially interested as a sign. The picture was small in the auction add listing it as a can and did not notice it was a can till listed here. I see many cans on completed ebay listings in much nicer shape.

They made 2 versions, a WW1 soldier, and a WW2 soldier. I do not think any is older than the 1940s, based on the top and cap configuration on all of them. If they were any earlier, they would have the built in pour cap, different handle, etc. My best guess is that the WW1 version was used from say, late 30s-40s, and then a more modern soldier was added.
