Of these 3 signs, the one on the left is different than the other two. Which is older? Does the topper on the center one remove? Any other comments are welcome. Before I started collecting signs, a guy I know that closed his station sold one for $25 last year.

The top doesn't remove. I believe the left one is the oldest and most of these Pennzoil signs are dated at the bottom.

Thanks
Mike

Thanks, I will try to win that one. I thought the opposite. I will look at the dates when I get there.

I was told that when pennzoil is over a complete bell that it was an older sign around the mid to late 50's and when the bell is split it is a later dated sign

Yes,
I would say the left is the oldest but I doubt you will not find a date on it. I have that sign, and it is not dated. Randy also has a very nice one. Randy is your dated?
Also, it is not just the oldest, but if you look at the font style on the upper and lower lettering, you will notice it is more of a block style relative to the other two.
You will find many "full bell" signs that do not have this block style font. So don't think this font change only happens with the bell split.
I believe this block style font was used on the earliest of the oval signs.

Going by old advertisements which I have at home, the bell split happened right around '56-'58 if I remember correctly.

Nice little collection there. If the price is right, get them all. A would think with a little barkeepers friend the two on the right will clean pretty nice. Unless the far right one is painted.

Both of these pictures show what I think is a very early oval sign. Sorry the pics not better.
Although a little tough to tell, I believe you can see that these signs have the blockier type font. And on these the text lines are straight and horizontal. They hadn't moved them to follow the border of the sign yet.
None the less, and this is only a theory, I believe the sign in these pics evolved into the sign on the left above, which then evolved into the signs with the more decorative font.
Just a thought.

I recently bought this one and there is not a date either. This one seems newer than the far left one, but has the full bell.

Thoughts?

I saw this at an antique store yesterday. The curb stand seems completely incorrect in shape and age. Correct me if I am wrong...they were very proud of it too...listed at $1295.

This one dated 1958. Split bell. Oldest piece of evidence I have of the split bell. And you see Scotts full bell above dated 1955. Need something '56 & '57.
