A gentleman brought this into the shop today. I've never seen one quite like it. I have seen just the thermometers before but not like this one. It is approximately 16" long with an aluminum end on it. He said it would be dipped into the tank and collect a sample in the aluminum part and take the temperature of the oil. I'd like to buy it from him but not sure about it's function or value. Does anyone have any info or insight on the piece? Any help is appreciated.

Interesting unique item. I have not seen one like that before. Apparently like you say for gauging oil. Bottom does not appear large enough to get an adequate sample, but may have had a specific use in some application.

Value on items like that would be what's it worth to you and your friend and can you reach a price equitable to both of you?

I know there are some refiners on here, maybe they have some better information and will chime in.

"Typically" tank sampling tools do not bring a high dollar. Small collector base and the same tools have been in use for eons.
(sample bottles and carriers they use today have been around for almost 100 years)
I would be curious to see what others may know.

Chuck
