Sometimes, a few of these gas & oil collectibles are just too plain and need a few accents to bring out the graphics! I started hiring a local artist a few years ago, to accent the lettering on the lubester lids that I was collecting. They turned out so good, and were so attractive when she finished with them, that it convinced me! They may not have come that way back in the day, and I doubt that many station owners took the time to add the accents that I have, but I bet some did!
The Cities Service curb signs are a perfect example. They stand out there on the curb, with that great looking clover shaped base, with all the embossed lettering clover & triangle. You don't even notice all of that when the base is all one color!
I have seen a few where the lettering was accented in white, and I thought it looked pretty good, so I contacted my artist friend and told her to accent this sign base to make it jump out at you! I showed her the sign that would go on it, and she took it from there!
While she was here, I handed her my ACME battery kit, and asked her what could be done with it? She took it with her, and this is the result. The graphics were on both sides, so we did both sides to make it visible and easier to display! It really adds to a very plain display piece, and brings it out into view, instead of being hidden because you don't notice it!
She's currently working on more lubester lids for me, and I'm sure something else will jump up and need to be accented!
Hope you like it!!

Those look great Kevin. I think you're right, a lot of the old items that were just plain Jane sure look a lot better when we accent them a little bit even though they may never have been displayed that way originally. I'm for all original but I also like things to look shiny and pop a little bit.....GB

Couldn't agree more Kevin. No damage done and it looks great!! And like you said, who knows how many station owners did the same thing.
Nice job!

Looks great Kevin, thanks for posting!

Even though this air meter had no embossed lettering on it, I took it to a friend of mine for a little of the same.

...painting iron is one thing, as it can be corrected down the road...but painting the battery service caddy can't, unless she used water soluble paints...

...do what you like - but I'm not troubled by the original appearance of this stuff...no station owner had the time to waste decorating his curb sign bases...that time would have been spent doing something to earn money for his station - like cleaning up, keeping the pumps or curbs painted, etc...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

Those look good.
I have seen steel oil cans also done that way.
No not original, but when professionally painted there is a buyers market that will pay 2 - 3 times the money over an original look.

Looks good. The bling is nice but I also see Marks point. It does alter/destroy history to a degree. At the end of the day, it's only stuff do with it; what gives you, the most pleasure and enjoyment.

The painting that she did on the battery service caddy, was just to highlight the raised portion of the identification label. It could easily be removed if desired, and isn't permanent unless you want it that way.
After seeing some pictures of higher end stations in some very classy neighborhoods, I don't doubt for a minute that accents were applied every now and then. I sure don't have any pictures of any, but I believe it did exist!

My dad had his six boys cleaning, painting all the time. Man I'd give anything to be painting the island again with Texaco black paint. 40 years has slipped by too quickly. : (
