Other on-line service was Bidspotter's .com

I never had any troubles at all with them, plus a couple of times I was even able to use dial-up before I started using my friend's DSL set up.

Cost, bidspotter is very expensive for the auctioneer. They charge a per auction charge vs proxibid which is a fixed cost no matter how many auctions you run with it per month/year.

bidspotter gets a commission based on the gross amount of sales run through it's system. We sold $116,000 to onine bidders, so we paid a commission based on that amount. It kind of behooves them to perform well.

DAN MATTHEWS TOLD ME THEY LEFT BIDSPOTTER (BAD IDEA) BECAUSE THEY HOPED TO GET SUM OF THE PROXBID CUSTOMER BASE.......AND PROXBID ALLOWED THEM TO NAME 10+ AUCTION HOUSES THAT WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO USE PROXIE BID SYSTEM.........
SCOTT YOU SAY THEY SWITCHED BECAUSE OF COST.....WELL IT COST ME THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS THE ONLINE BIDDING WAS A JOKE (THE RESPONSE ON OLDGAS ALONE CONFIRMS THAT)IT APPEARS NO ONE HAD COMPLAINED OF BIDS THEY PLACED VIA BIDSPOTTER AUCTIONS.
I HAVE ASKED AUMANN AUCTIONS TO RECONCIDER THEIR POSITION OF DOING NOTHING.....HOPEFULLY THEY WILL.

Well, I have been following this thread for awhile and as a full time Auctioneer I was'nt going to reply. But one post got my blood boiling.
First as far as buyers premiums, I don't like them either and do not use them. They are not custom in my area. Folks here never heard of them. I do Not feel they are needed at all. In some parts of the state here they are used on everything including real estate.
If auctions were not successful the papers would not be full of auction ads.
Second, I have been in the auction business for 27 years and I have NEVER sold anything at a public auction that did not bring what is was worth. The price paid a auction IS what the item is worth. That is another reason I do not like the BP, beleive it or not there are many people who cannot figure percentages in their head. Look at how many cannot make change in the stores today.
Third , I have never been to an Aumann Auction. They must be successful, they do alot of petro auctions. Many auctioneers specialize in certain fields. Sellers have a tendency to hire "specialists" or "experts".
I would bet there are local auctioneers who could do just as good a job, on-line bidding and all. Remember, an "expert" is someone six or more miles away from home.
Lastly, the post that Most auctioneers are dishonest, set me in orbit. The poster tells of having 4 auctions and used 3 different auctioneers. That means that each one was dishonest, what it really means is the seller's merchandise is always worth more to them than what it is really worth. I have been out to look at auctions and the seller tells me that the last two auctioneers they used were s.o.b's. I usually walk away because I can see that if I do their 3rd auction, I will be the 3rd S.O.B.
Sadly there are auctioneers out there that are dishonest. I bet there are even petro collectors out there that are dishonest.
There are even Doctors and other professionals that are dishonest. But for someone to say that Most(auctioneers) are dishonest gets me in an fightin mood real fast. Auctioneering is a rewarding profession and NOT an easy job by no means. If anyone would like to try it there are many good schools out there, get right with it.
Just had to defend the oldest and greatest method of marketing there is, and the profession I dearly love.

I think terry made some good comments on this subject. There doesnt need to be a buyers premium,I go to all kinds of auctions and have never paid one,I pay for the merchandise i am receiving not the advertising to get me there, thats not my responsibility. On the other hand some items definately dont bring what they are worth,I bought 3 churns the other day for 40 dollars(daisy),no one wanted them,I sold one today for 1500,big difference and that was their offer not mine. Why would it matter who was auctioning off your stuff,Terry could do it just as well as Aumanns could, probably charge the seller less and not have a buyers premium and still make a good amount of money for each of them.We are the experts at what this stuff is worth and what we will give for it not Aumanns.

TerryL,

Re: "I have NEVER sold anything at a public auction that did not bring what is was worth. The price paid a auction IS what the item is worth."

Every item you auctioned in 27 years??!! I have to strongly disagree with your statement. Maybe what you are saying is that those items sold for what they were "worth" to THOSE particular buyers on THAT one day. However, auctions almost always have a few bargains that someone in the crowd will recognize. If I buy an item at auction and turn around and immediately double my money, what's the true "worth" of that item?? Auctions are just like any other market in that lack of knowledge or financial resources in the crowd creates opportunity for temporary bargains below actual "worth".

Thanks Terry, This subject comes up often but seldom do we hear from real auctioneers, mostly hear form self proclaimed experts.
