All right, guys, educate me here. What's the idea of these shortened pumps? Who did it, and why?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I have a real short Wayne 100. It was used at an ariport in Yolo County,Ca. Hard to tell it's not orignal. The bottom of the doors are the give away on the inside. Looks factory from outside. It is for sale by the way. It is missing meter and sight glass manifold and it just inst worth it to me to buy all the parts as I have another complete one. Would make a great street rod show caar prop with a tv in it or something. It is dead straight and no rust at all. Tom Buckles has the manifold.

One of the reasons they shortened them is so an airplane wing would go over them and not through them. They later made pumps that looked like square boxes (redundant) that were only a couple of feet off the ground. Many local airports didn't have fuel trucks.

The shortening of pumps also happened for stylistic reasons. Post WW-2, pumps transitioned from tall to short. To make older tall pumps more "modern," pump rebuilders and jobbers would cut them down.
