Too many 'special' plates around to trust most of the ones that turn up.

I hate seeing inconsistent damage especially showing recent white chipping that hasn't aged with the rust that is present on a supposed uncleaned piece. There is some bleed through on the lettering that makes me suspect it. And the mounting holes are rather inconsistent to the border edge.

I'd stay away from it.

Compare to This ended auction for two plates.

Yeah sign is legit. Tons of these made. No questions on originality.
Damage very common around grommets
So you are saying my diesel fuel special is fake?? I bought the two from that listing. They sold really cheap

Have "IR" signs been replicated? I always thought that was a sign of authenticity.

I personally have not seen a "IR" marked sign that was not original. I'm sure the day will come when the repro scum add date codes to the reproductions, but so far it's been a safe indicator of authenticity.

Looking at the overall damage and how it has aged over the years in comparing the one listing to the other. So many of the modern repops are being edge damaged and dinged to mimic aging that when I start seeing large edges of white porcelain(as in the sign in question's corner damage) versus similar damage on the one in the left I linked to, I mark that as a possible factor.

I wasn't aware that IR had become a validation point of authenticity on these. Chalk that one up to something of which I wasn't aware. Though I'm not sure if the fellows overseas have begun marking pump plates thus, I wouldn't put it past them to do it one of these days as there have been other signs that have had markings becoming far too close to originals.

I'm certainly no expert, but if the criminals are so good at reproducing the graphics on the sign, why wouldn't they start including the date? Just playing devils advocate. Keith

On these particular wide blue border plates the IR marking is certainly a point to look for on originality. I wouldn't buy any wide blue border plate that wasn't showing evidence of the date code at the lower right point. (IF that area had damage)
As I stated above, I'm sure the day will come when they do add the code to reproduction Mobilgas and Special plates. Good thing for us true collectors is they usually get some detail wrong somewhere with the repros, so hopefully they will be easy to spot if they do come to market.
Like Dan said, these are not rare, you just need to be aware of what to look for to make sure you're buying the real deal.
