Hello All! After 6 months of searching in my local area I finally found a classic old pump to restore! This is a Bennett 766 that I found at a scrap yard out in the country, just about 30 minutes away from my house. The scrap yard owner did have knowledge of vintage gas pumps, and we agreed on $350, which I think is a fair price. It's been hard to find these old classic pumps in my area. The pump is complete, except I did manage to "shatter" one of the door glass panels when I got it unloaded in my garage (had to hold back the tears!). Do most of you veteran restorers replace the door panel glass, or do you try to keep the original glass? Now I don't have a choice and have to replace :-( But still happy I found the pump. Here are some pictures, enjoy!

Very nice pump, that would be border line for restoration for me, clean, a little paint here and there and preserve the heritage, but that's me. You have a great pump there which ever way you go. Congrats!
Have gas all the time

I replace the glass because usually I can't get the glass clean enough or it is usually scratched. Richard

I cannot get the old glass clean so I replace it when I restore a pump. If it is a flat glass the cost is only $2.50 to $3.00 each.....For a unrestored pump I would keep the old glass.

Anyone tried that Deft brand cleaner on pumps like this?
I've been told it can do wonders to pull color back out.

Yeah- its a cool looking pump. I cast my vote for trying to use something to take some of the rust away and then some wax. The door decal really makes it. 350 is a really good deal IMO.

Nice pump! I've done a few of those and there one of my favorite pumps. I'd restore but I could see where others would want the patina! Go to any hardware place to get the glass cut for the door.

Nice, like others have said, I would not restore that one.

Thanks guys for your comments and suggestions. I don't feel so bad about breaking the glass now (ha,ha). After 6 months of working on Gasboys, I was not prepared for the sheer weight of this retail pump, as Bryce pointed out. This thing is heavy!
I really appreciate the opinions about whether to restore or not to restore. My original intention was to restore it, which I will probably still do. But it's good to take a step back and look at the original patina, etc.
I'll keep you all posted!
