Matt, what you did is pretty much what we would have done in the '60s.
The most important object at "the Working Station" was to get the pump up in working condition; as quickly as possible, using the best method(s) available at the time... (that included wire brushing a rust spot, using body filler if needed, prime and paint)

Having the complementary color underneath (the red) can also give it depth if the coat on top is not too thick in places. I do that a lot for my paintings to give them depth
