Just in case you haven't heard, the petroliana AUCTION OF THE YEAR for 2006 is scheduled for January 27-29 at the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Kentucky. That's when our good friend Rex Benson and his lovely wife Nita put up their amazing collection of oil & gas globes, signs, cans, etc. for auction to the highest bidder. At least 1100 lots will offered including about 170+ globes, with several being the only ones known to exist. Also included is probably the largest collection of KYSO items, and tons of Mobil stuff.

We've had lots of large oil & gas auctions in the last few years.......in 2003 the highlight was GPM auction (Jeff Pederson), in 2004 it was Roy Reed's, and this year Gary Runyon's collection topped the list. For 2006 Rex's auction will certainly be the biggest and best. I just spent 3 days helping the folks at Aumann Auctions photograph and catalog the items and I'm sure all of you will find at least one item they can't possibly live without......I've already ID'ed about 20 things that I sure would love to own!!!

Check out the Aumann Auction website (www.aumannauctions.com) for a few pictures. They're planning to have the complete catalog online before Thanksgiving. Lot's of rare and high quality pieces, plus plenty of lower priced, more common items..........something for everyone. Sparta is located about 50 miles south of downtown Cincinnati.

So save all your nickels and dimes (or maybe take out another 2nd mortgage on the house) and make plans to be there for all the fun!!!

Richard,
You only found twenty items you want? There are at least 50 globes that I'd love to have. If I save up I might be able to afford one or two.......champagne taste, beer budget.
Rex has been talking about this for a year and a half. Now its time for someone else to enjoy the items in his amazing collection.
This will be a spectacular sale with a lot of signs, globes, and cans from Mobil, Kyso, Atlantic, Sohio, Ashland, etc.
See ya at the auction!!!!

Wanted: Gas pump globes:Sinclair & affiliates, IL companies. Ripple bodies. Anything Sinclair, Stoll, Pierce, 4 Bros.

Buy the way Rex, I see the most prominant item of the auction flyer is that Olds globe you beat me up on. I bet you do pretty well with it as it is the only original I know of.

Rex,

If you don't mind me asking, WHY are you selling out your superb collection?? I noticed a few questioning comments in previous threads but no answers. Of course, it could be none of my business.

We all know that people come and go in any hobby. However, there seems to be a growing trend in the last couple of years of long time collectors selling out. Just like any market, I'm concerned that this trend is a sign of a "top" in this market.

Anyone care to comment??

Paul

Paul,
This STUFF has to be past around eventually. WE CAN'T TAKE IT WITH US !

Like I have said MANY times.
WE NEVER OWN IT, WE ARE CARETAKERS OF THE PAST FOR THE FUTURE GENERATIONS.

Rex,
What are you going to do with an EMPTY building ? Grow mushrooms or start a TURKEY RANCH ! LOL

Dick,

Well, yes. I totally agree with what you're saying. But that reasoning more or less applies to those who have gone on to the great gas station in the sky. I'm wondering why the long time, still living collectors are selling out. Could it be for valid reasons, like astute estate planning or just plain cashing out at the top??

Rex I want to say that you have a very very impressive collection. I am also looking forward to meeting you at Peotone along with the other fellow gas nut that will be there. I also agree with you to Dick why burden your loved ones with the disposal of our collection. When the older generation reaches the top of the mountian the younger ones like myself are climbing it. I am sure that it would be real hard to see your collection being sold at a auction. I am sure Rex will shed a tear when it is done. But all in all it is nice to know the other mountian climbers will enjoy a piece or two of the pie untill they reach the top. I know me & my wife have already talked about what to do with my collection if something happened to me. The kids get something then the rest will go & I am only 35. Well that is my two cents & cant wait to see alot of you guys at the auction. It will not want to be missed

Hey Paul, glad to see you are keeping your collection. As far as Rex and others can't give a clue. Must be or have been a retirement plan. Me I like my collection too much to dump it. I invested in CA real esate and would hate to give it up but might have to sell off when I retire to keep up my expensive life style. I think the top might be close so have everyone panic and sell out. I will be there still collecting but at a lower price. I don't care if the bottom falls out of signs and all the rest. I never paid anything more for an item than I wanted and if the whole thing goes south so what. I sure as heck wouldn't count my collection as my best investment. If it goes up great or down fine I won't be the one selling it. I have one son that likes the stuff but it is up to my wife (if she out lives me) to do what she wants with it.It's only money. Win some lose some. My 2 cents. Ted

Hey Ted,

I agree 100%. Myself, I enjoy the collecting hobby but truly enjoy the "finding" more than the "having". Some of my collection I treasure enough that my wife will have to sell it because I won't do it before I die. That's why I wonder when life long collectors sell out their collections. Of course, it's their personal business, whether for a "retirement plan" as you mentioned, estate planning or just bailing out.

By the way, if your main investment has been California real estate, you have been doing extremely well for yourself! You ought to be buying a lot of Rex's auction items next year!!

Paul,
Long time collectors sell their collections for a variety of reasons. Some want to downsize in their later years, some consider their collections investments and they want to cash in, for some its because of health reasons, others because they don't have anyone to pass their collections too. For some its a combination of some of those reasons or others. I don't really think Rex needs to explain his decision to sell to anyone. I'm with Ted. I like my collection too much to dump it. I plan on keeping my stuff until I die. I want a few pieces to go to certain people but my wife and son can figure out what to do with the rest.
What's important now is Rex is happy with his decision to sell. This is a great opertunity for the rest of us to add some great items to our collections.
Bob

I'm selling a couple of different collections in February. One for a guy that has no intention of stopping collecting, he just wants to lock in the dollar gains his stuff has experienced in the last 5 years. The other guy wants to buy an airplane. SEE...different strokes for different folks!!

This is a topic near and dear to my heart being a fairly new petro collector. I’ve been buying signs for about the past 5 years….just about the same timeframe that has seen the highest dollar appreciation for this hobby. To me prices have always been high since I wasn’t collecting when the stuff was cheap.
Perhaps we are at the top of the market but so is housing, classic cars, fine art, etc. Everything seems to go in cycles. This market may rescind for a while as does everything else but as long as new collectors keep entering the hobby, the bar continues to raise.
Me personally, I know I spent too much on some of the signs I have but I only buy what I like. This way if the market does drop for a while, I still get to enjoy the beauty and pleasure my collection brings regardless of current market value. Rex selling his collection just allows me to add another piece to my collection and it allows Rex to enjoy the fruits of his labor. Good for you Rex!

Never gave this topic much thought, my biggest worry was that my son or daughter would sell a restored clock face for a few hundered dollars after I died. I'm 35 but anyone could go at anytime.
I don't plan on selling my collection, thats not why I collect. I collect because, one I want to preserve and restore, second it drives Kristin (my wife to be) nuts, third I just like going out to the shop and looking at it.
I look at this aution as a way of meeting people and driving Kristin a little more nuts. Looks like a lot of great stuff, I will see you there.

As far as your collection goes after you die...It would be a big help for your survivors if you took the time to photograph all of your items and put it on a CD, along with what you paid, the date, and what you or an appraiser preferably would value the stuff on a said date....that way your family will at least have a ball park idea of what it is worth.

Then again, the auction system works well at dispersal time; some may go a little cheaper some a little higher but it should work out over all. I too would be bothered to think one of my visibles or clock faces, fully restored, would sell for pennies on the dollar like 35 bucks or something stupid. Then, you could specify some type of reserve...

That's why its important to use an auctioneer that is not only reputable, but knowledgable about what they are selling. Aumann's easily meet both of those criteria.

Rex.....the flyer looks GREAT!! I did see a couple of small errors....I think it's the Beltera (not "Belteria") Casino on the last page. And on the 3rd page it says....One of the best Mobil Oil collections & "relative" brands. I'd say "related" brands, but that's just me!!!

Thanks for all of the positive comments guys. I am looking forward to a great 3 days of fun.
BUYTEX: hope you get what you want. As a matter of fact, it is important to me that my collection goes to people that will enjoy it.
db: We have enough winter mice in our log house, don't want to go to Disney and bring some more home.
That is a great idea. Let's all get together one night. It's OK if JJ buys. There is a McDonalds about 15 miles away. LOL.
There is over 40 Mobil globes. There should be some good buys. PUMPS TOO. Again, I hope that everyone gets what they want.

Wow, Thanks for the catalog Rex. My wife and I were heading out the driveway when I stopped to get the mail, once I seen the catalog arrived, I made her drive so I could check it out. This isn't an auction but the petro event of the century. I'll be there for sure.

Well, the big event is getting closer!! Two weeks from today it will all be over. The whole amazing collection will be dispersed across the country, and a bunch of us will have some really cool new items to share on BOTW!!

In the last month I've been lucky enough to handle just about every one of the 1100+ lots in the auction, and I can assure you there's some really great pieces available. The pictures online and in the hardcopy catalog are good (I took quite a few of the pictures!!)....but they really don't do justice to many of the items. When you get to see them in person, you won't be disappointed!!

Of course, most of the Mobil lots aren't really that good......so my advise is to save your money and bid on all the other things, like KYSO, Chevron, Atlantic, Aetna, Sinclair, Texaco, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, etc.....!!!

Rex; Great ad in Antique week! That ad will do you 20 times as much good as an ad in one of the petroleum mags. The gas guys have all known about your auction for months but an ad like that will attract people that don't even know about the gas hobby but will come because they think the stuff is neat.

The only down side of an ad like that is that it will make it tougher for us gas guys to buy stuff. (lol!) See you next week Rex! Sit back, enjoy the auction, and don't sweat the small stuff. Let the Aumann Auction gang do their job, it's going to be a great auction!

Bob, Are you buying dinner sat. night after the auction? I figure since your driving the bank vault truck to the auction you could at least take us out for dinner.

Is there room in the bank truck to haul globes?

Looking for anything from Hoosier Pete, Platolene 500 and Red Bird.

Hey Rex & Nita, Sorry Dave and I won't be able to make your auction, conflict of dates. Just remember some will go good, others will be soft, but from a former auctioneer, it is the bottom line. GOOD LUCK, we will be thinking of you. Going to try and get online. You are a GREAT couple. Thanks for all the good times. We love ya, Dave and Linda

rex- I know other collectors who have sold of the bulk of there collection but have held back some pieces that are near and dear, are you? Will you still be involved in the hobby and collect again or is this a goodbye? You have always posted some good information and hope that you will continue the hunt.

Hi Scott. Thanks for the positive comments.
I will never be off of old gas until/or if they suspend me. As far as auctioning off the stuff, everything is going. I have a lot of odds and ends and a few globes that I will be selling at the gas and oil shows. It would have been just too many items to put in the auction. When I first thought about selling my stuff, I started with just car dealer signs and then thought that I would sell everything but the Mobil and KYSO becuase they were my favorites. But as time went by and things changed, I decided that it would be best to sell it all. The hunt is never over for me. It is just my time to sell my collection.

The Gargoyle Mobil Oil cabinet and the visable pumps were wrapped in blankets and cardboard and then shrink wrapped.

The set up today at Kentucky Speedway went great. Take a look at all of the pictures. Before I got there, J. Mayfield and Jerret, the UPS driver were testing cars on the track. They came by and looked at the stuff and said that they would be in Las Vegas racing, but that they would be bidding on line. Sorry that I missed them.

Anybody have trouble with Proxibid internet bidding on the Benson auction today?? I was signed up, downloaded all the software updates and logged in live. Tried to bid on a sign and the auction never took my bid (I'm on DSL not dial-up). I watched helplessly while the sign went for less than half of my planned top bid price!! Very frustrating and inexcusable!!

I was bidding live through proxibid today..I bid on a globe right before it closed and it accepted it and said I was in the lead only to find it went to an "onsite" bidder for less than my bid. Who knows? I wasnt incredibly mad because it was going on the credit card but would have loved it for more than it closed for. I think some items were a real bargain...especially the globe i wanted..er ah globes...LOL

We turned the sound off, it was too confusing. Thought we had lost the Power Diesel globe because they passed on it but they went back to it!
Managed to win that and the mobilgas special (one piece). Both are english globes so im glad to bring them back over here.
