Sometimes when I buy an old oil can, I bet on the possibility of it cleaning up and how much it will clean up. You never know until you receive the can in the mail and then its too late! LOL I can do pretty good with cans that have a strong paint on them but sometimes they are stained beyond help.
I took a chance on a can I liked the other day and when I received it today, I couldn't wait to see what I could do. I'm pretty cautious because I have done damage to some in the past and when you hit that point, it can't be undone. I have kind of learned to spot the weaker paints and I don't try much with them.
Here is todays results---The first 3 pictures are as received and the next set of pics will be after I finished the can.

Morning Kevin my name is Dan Ciriello. Read your post can I ask what you used to clean the can? I used some simple green on. A 5 quart tydol can and ruined it. So now I am very careful on trying to cleanup cans. Thanks Dan

I use Mothers Mag Wheel cleaner. It works great on porcelain signs and even works well on painted surfaces like oil cans, but you have to be careful anytime you are using a chemical on a painted surface! This stuff is really mild but it can take some paint off in some instances. Like I said, I can pretty well tell if a can has weak paint or not, and I always try it in an inconspicuous area first.
I have always had really good luck with this stuff because it is so mild, yet it seems to remove most petroleum based crud and marks. I would recommend trying it on some old can that really isn't woth anything and get used to the product before you try it out on the Holy Grail! LOL
