Some collectors don't believe it helps to report these fakes to Ebay, but I believe it does. To what extent, I don't know, but to sit on our butts and do nothing is even worse!

For those of us who are new at this, like me, would you mind please teaching us what about that sign is fake?

Agreed please. I took the time to look over all his items for sale and they looked alright to me with an untrained eye. The two things I did notice to be a bit out of place was the hardware store eye bolts and the zip ties in the first picture.

No original curb signs were single sided...defeats the purpose!

Reported Kevin!

Thanks

Ok that makes sense, so basically it's a pierced together hodge podge of parts and pices but could all be real not reproductions but over priced as a complete piece.

This sign was never used or made for Cities Service Oil Co. It is a modern day, embossed tin, single sided sign. The frame is obviously home made and the only real thing about it would be the cast iron base, although there are reproductions of it floating around too.
As Mike stated, curb signs were made to be seen from both sides and were always made out of heavy material in order to survive out in the elements. The statement that it was made to "swing in the wind" is truly laughable! Curb signs were always at the mercy of the wind and that was why they used cast iron bases.
The true measure of whether or not a collectible is a reproduction, or fantasy, is the old photos that we have and are truly a record of what was actually used! There are all kinds of photos of the actual curb signs used by Cities Service and they were very particular about their signage. They NEVER used tin junk like this to display their logo and name. As a 15 year collector of Cities Service, I have pretty much seen it all and this sign is not one of them.

Awesome thanks for taking the time to explain. I kinda figured that it should be double sided and it appeared that someone “hillbillied” it by way it was hung from the pole. But being new at this I would rather ask than put forth my uninformed opinion and look stupid.
Merry Christmas all

Just because you look at a guys other items and they look alright to you... don't judge a book by its cover, unless you are knowledgeable and know for sure if an item is real. Do you know if all those patches are real? They fake tons of patches from gas stations, to police departments, to WWII. Do states really waste paint on the back side of those original license plates? If so, which states do and don't, etc. [By the way, I'm not saying those items are fake, I don't know. I'm just using this as an example of the many questions to ask yourself]. The moral of the story is, do a lot of research before you buy from an unknown seller on eBay.

And don't think a seller is good just because his stuff 'looks' okay, especially if you have an "untrained" eye.

Please don't be offended by this, I am trying to help you and other new members who read it.

Don't buy anything from eBay, unless you are 100% positive it is real. And if you are unsure, I would ask the experts here for advice. Looks can be very deceiving.

By the way, his Kendall sign is just pieced together as well.

-Steve

Your statements are why I asked so in the future I can be more discerning. A amateur like me has to start somewhere. I figure asking questions is a good way to start. And no I’m not offended by any means, constructive criticism is a part of learning if one is smart enough to understand it’s meant to help.
