Just a little opinion poll. I had some folks call us for an estimate on a Wayne 615 that had been damaged. I generally charge $50 for these unless I'm assured I'll get the business for the repairs/parts.
When I estimated a 12.5" x 26" original cylinder at $600, the people weren't at all happy. They were afraid it couldn't be replaced for that price. Am I crazy or do you guys think if you went around advertising that you paid $600/ea for original cylinders, these would just come out of the woodwork?? Just wondering out loud if I'm out of line on my pricing.

P.S. Anybody have one for sale?

Seth,
I just sold an original blue tinted cylinder out of a G&B 176 for $450. It was in excellent shape with no chips or cracks. I would say that the location and availability of the cylinder would help determine the price, especially if they do not want to ship one. The Jarvis jinx could move on over to original cylinders if people are not careful. I personally think the price is a little high but if it is near mint maybe so. Just my 2 cents worth.

Thanks, Phil

Thanks, Phil

Seth, In my opinion, for what it is worth, you are in line. Even though this is a "hobby", some of us do this as a business as well. I get calls everyday asking how to repair pumps? Free advice and lost time...Many want to know if I have a part and when I quote them a fair price.....considering what the market is bringing.....you'd think I was trying to take advantage of them. Or they say they want it, so I pack it in order to get an accurate UPS rate.....no payment ever comes....These people have never logged one mile to find a pump, pull it out of a ditch, pay the owner, cover fuel, food and lodging...when they have done that then maybe they will understand our position???? BOY!!!! I feel better! Thanks, Paul

Just like Bettin said, get your $$$$$ up front!!! Check out "The Winner" on the non-petro forum. This guy read & signed the contract, and look what he did. Then I had to wait for him to get a tractor to unload it!!! Another time, I drove 40 miles to give an estimate for a clean up, (her future ex was a JUNK collector) both her & her attorney thought that I would BUY all of her junk. It's funny how people seem to think that scrap steel goes for $400.00 per ton!!!

There is NOTHING wrong with getting paid for what you do. BTW, neither the woman or her attorney thought that I should get paid for the trip. Get the $50 for the estimate, then apply it to the bill when the work is done. That should eliminate the people looking for a free appraisal....

Seth,
I'm not much of a pump guy, but from what I've seen at the shows $600 should buy an original cylinder. Sounds like the people are complaining because they're fishing for a bigger insurance settlement.

I paid $450.00 for a NOS cylinder about 6 months ago And most blue tints I've seen go for about $50 to $100 more.

Hey Seth,

Sorry but I have to say that $600 is a little pricey, I spent $335 for a clear cylinder last summer at an auction that had several pumps lubsters and there were several gas and oil collectors at the sale. I would agree that 50 to 100 more for a blue tint cylinder would be a fair price. A friend of mine went to a swap meet last summer and got a blue tint etched cylinder for a Butler pump for 250, granted he got a steal. That is just my $0.05 worth and didnt mean to offend you, but you asked for opinions.

Easy...you missed the point of my post. The customers were dissastisfied with the estimate, because their line of thinking was that they couldn't replace the cylinder for $600.....they thought I was too cheap.

FYI...I've sold about 20 12.5" x 26" for $600-$700 in the last year, about 10 13 5/8" x 22" for $1000. They are not getting any cheaper!!

Seth, Yep, I did misunderstand your post!! It seems that people never think we are too cheap!!! I also agree that as these things become harder to find, the price will increase. Best regards, Paul
