I was looking over the inside of a Bennett 956 I had recently picked up. Everything inside intact and I noticed what looks like a small tamper seal attached to the meter unit. It looks like it’s dated 1958 and has a crown and some letters which could spell Standard oil. My question is was it the manufacturer or gas company or even government who would attach these seals?

In my experience, it was usually done from the factory once the meter was calibrated, thereby guaranteeing a true gasoline delivery. Later, pumps were re-calibrated while in service again for accuracy. Paul www.severngaspumps.com

Thanks for weighing in guys, it was mostly to satisfy my curiosity. I have one other idea, in Canada there is "consumer and corporate affairs" which regulates standards, weights and measures. I can't find any reference but is it possible that the tamper seal says " standards division" the crown could also represent a seal of some sort in reference to the British monarchy. I'm probably going into left field with this theory and I know its a trivial detail but interesting none the less.

I did! From 2007 to 2015 I was a gas pump calibrater. I worked for a company that did all things gas station. From new construction to simple maintenance. I was licensed by the state of Michigan to cut them off, adjust the meter, verify calibration, and install new seals. My seal had my initials and the company's initials and was registered with the state. My test equipment was calibrated in the state's laboratory and was licensed by the state, thus giving me most of the authority of a government agent, but still being a private contractor. I was hired by the station's owner to calibrate all the meters usually once a year, or if there was ever a problem.
