Can someone tell me what years the small lead top oil cans (like this one) were produced and when they were phased out for the plastic top type.

It’s a really hard question to answer as some plastic top oilers predate lead tops from the same company, vice versa, and some that have no rhyme or reason to when and why. I think it’s been asked a few times on the forum and there’s never been a straight answer for those reasons. Dating specific cans would probably be easier, unfortunately.


Looking for Michelin items + NJ oil company related items (Mohawk, Guardian, Whiz, etc) + animal-related petroliana + Gargoyle/Shell/Sinclair items

I agree with RedHat, but have found that most lead tops date from the late 1930s.
