I am trying to get the doors off of a Gilbarco 996-1G. I have searched and seen that there should be a screw below the sight glass, but mine does not have that. What’s the trick?

Have you tried just to unscrew it? It appears that the guard is part of screw. Very nice pump by the way, are you going to just clean it and love it?

Push in the buttons on the side of the key lock, although it may be in the locked position

Done4, not sure what you suggest I unscrew. My intentions are to clean it, replace some rubber, get a repop globe, light it up and enjoy.

KZ1000, are these the buttons you spoke of? If so then I guess it is in the locked position.

Any other suggestions?

Sorry I can't help you with entry, but I agree it is a great looking survivor. According the the information I have, that pump was the 4th pump built in 1949. The serial numbers span from 18445 to 29711 for the model 996 in 1949.

Just push in and unscrew it counterclockwise wise a half turn. It should pop out. It’s, a Zerk fitting, we had them on jet engine cowlings.

Yes the buttons are actually the end of a cable( like a choke cable) That when pushed releases the latch that holds the doors closed The lock between them places a stop across the cables so they can't be pushed You will need to drill the center of the lock out so you can turn it to move the stop across the cables If they won't push after you have done that then the cables are probably froze up.

A key will allow you to turn a plate which access the cables through the holes on each side of the lock. Press the ends of the cable just inside the holes to release each door at the top. The doors just lift off once the cable is pressed.

Any chance these were all keyed alike and there are keys available?

Your pump is actually a C996 because it has the push button door lock. If you would like to look at some pictures of the 996 pumps, check out this page of my website: http://petrolianacollectibles.com/gb%20992.htm

The parts list shows ever part in your pump. The original globe holder was a 7" but they sold an adaptor to convert it to a 6" globe.

Too bad you didn't find a 996 with the "Sell-A-Vision" on the top.

Update. I was able to get the doors off by going through the top and using a pry bar to release the doors. Boy, those screws in the top did not want to let go. Thanks for the help, I’m not sure I would have ever figured that out. I attached pics in case anyone else can use the info.

Update. I was able to take the lock out of the pump and get a key made today. So it should work as designed now. Thanks again for the help.
