It is the 7th and the sign of the month will be Mobil Oil. This will include way back to Socony and Vacuum so the gargoyles will all be there as well as the flying horses. Anyone with any information as to when Socony Vacuum was bought out by Mobil or any topic associated with this please post the information for everyone to enjoy. Please try to give information to include porcelain, painted, tin, paper carboard and dimensions if possible. Lets make this a great sign of the month.
My first sign is a double sided porcelain flange sign 14x24 inches. I took this in trade for some work in my auto reapir shop. Tried to offer cash before that but they opted for repair work which actually was worth less. Go figure. Ted :

The Mobiloil trademark belonged to Vacuum Oil Company. Vacuum used the Gargoyle logo. Socony owned the pegasus logo. Socony and Vacuum merged in 1931.

Here are some of my signs from Vacuum oil Co and Mobil oil Co in Sweden.
First is a 47X31inch Gargoyle.

Second is a pretty rare sign from just after WW2, in the transition between Gargoyle and Pegasus.
Third sign is a 26X27 inch double sided flange.
.
Fourth sign is a smaller shield that is convex.
. Fifth sign is a tin sign from a car that participated in the Mobil economy run i Sweden in 1960. . Next is a German sign from a garage, markin the parking lots.
.

.
Next is a porcelain thermometer, also available in three sizes. This is 46X9 inches, the middle size.

Richard,
When I saw the group of pump plates I thought...neat!
When I saw the second group I thought...cool!
When I saw the Mobilheat sign with the smaller sign hanging from it I thought...wow!
When I saw the Gargoyle lubester signs I though...awsome!
When I saw the Gargoyle thermometer I started drooling!!!!
By the time I got to the SOCONY lubester signs I needed a big ol' slobber bucket!!!!
Thats undoubtedly the most impressive collection of small Mobil signs I've ever seen. Could you post some info on when and where your signs would have been used?
GREAT collection.
Bob
p.s. Were you able to get the globe you emailed me about?

Thanks to all you “oldgasers” for the nice comments on my signs….90% of my collection is Mobil related, so I don’t have much to share unless Mobil is the topic. Lastgas15 asked for information about where and when the signs were used……I can provide some good information and some “best-guesses”. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable on the subject, but not an expert. I’ve numbered the photos above from top to bottom for reference.

1) These single-sided pump shields were used in the USA from about 1931 to the mid 1950’s.

2) More SSP pump shields from 1931 – 1950’s. The one with the right-facing Pegasus is actually a truck door sign….Pegasus faced left on all pump plates during this time period. The 2 small numbered shields are from Europe…..any sign spelled “Mobiloel” was used in the German market. The tiny shield with just Pegasus is one of my favorites, but I don’t have a clue how, where, or when it was used.

3) The red motor spirit sign at top center is from South Africa and dates from 1911 – 1930. The Mobilheat sign is double-sided and from 1931 – 1950’s.

4) Most of the Gargoyle double-sided lubster signs are marked Vacuum Oil and were used in the USA before 1931.

5) The red motor car oils sign, the can shaped sign, the motorcycle sign, and the curved lube cabinet sign are all marked Vacuum Oil and were used in the Great Britain from 1900 to (?). The thermometer is obviously foreign, but I don’t know what language is used…..can someone out there help?

6) The signs at top center and left are domestic, the small flange is Austrian, the large oval German, the authorized service Australian, the “A” and “BB” are English, and the odd shaped one is French. All would date from the early 1900’s to WWII.

7) All the Socony lubster signs are domestic, except the bottom center, and would date from before 1931.

8) The Plume and Laurel signs are from Australia and are pre-WWII.

9) The two yellow Elephant signs are 1911 – 1920’s and were made is the USA but used overseas. Standard-Vacuum was formed in 1933 and existed until 1962, so that dates the red Elephant.

10) The White Eagle and General Petroleum signs are domestic and pre-1930.

11) The Sphinx sign with the pump is 1920’s, the blue one 1930’s , and the Pegasus version after WWII. All came from Austria. The Sunflower sign is from southern Europe and the yellow Tiger is from the far-east, probably China……not sure the their ages.

HERE'S MY COOKIE CUTTER. I GOT THIS ABOUT 8 YEARS AGO AT A LOCAL
ANTIQUE BARN SALE. I SAW THE BODY AND THE PRICE AND QUICKLY BECAME INTERESTED. I ASKED THE PROPRIETORS ABOUT THE 3 MISSING PARTS, AND THEY SAID THEY WERE NOT AVAILABLE. I LEFT W/O THE PEGASUS....BUT GOT TO THINKING ABOUT REPRODUCING THE MISSING PARTS ON THE DRIVE HOME. THE NEXT DAY I WENT BACK AND I BOUGHT THE LEG AND TAILLESS PONY AND TOOK IT HOME. IN THE WEEKS TO FOLLOW, I CRANKED OUT WHAT LOOKS TO BE SOME PRETTY CONVINCING FRONT & REAR LEGS AND A TAIL. THE AVERAGE JOE DOESN'T LOOK TWICE...UNTIL THEY HEAR THE TRUTH!

HERE'S A 1932 BEAUTY I GOT FROM EBAY. THIS GUY COULDN'T BE HOME
TO MEET ME THE DAY I PICKED IT UP. SO HE LEAVES THE SIGN ON HIS FRONT PORCH AND TELLS ME TO LEAVE MY PERSONAL CHECK IN HIS FRONT DOOR WINDOW! IT ALL WENT SMOOTH!

Well the end of the month is almost here. I will start a new sign on around April 7th. This is my last Mobil sign hung outside. A porcelain flange sign with the gargoyle. Ted

1st is a large painted tin sign approx. 5ft. wide.
2nd is a couple of weathervane tops.
3rd, I was told this is a pipeline single sided sign.
4th, Mobiloil bottle rack. All 4 sides are the same, except that there are handle holes on 2 sides.
Dick

This is my last Mobil sign for my collection. A pump plate. We will be starting a new sign of the month on the 7th. Scott Shipers will get it going as I will be on vacation. We will be doing Standard oil company, Chevron and all associated companies east and west coast. Let's make it another good one. Ted
