Found this Texaco base last weekend. Does anyone know what type of sign went on it? Thanks...Larry

Probably one of those octagonal "clean clear golden" curb signs.
In any case, it's awesome! Is that original paint or a repaint? Man... I want one...

Dick:
You might have something there... Noticed it says Texaco on the bottom, not The Texas Company.

Dick is right (as usual) but, if you have Texaco curb signs, it is a good way to display them as opposed to hanging them.

Thanks everybody for taking the time to post about this Texaco base. All you old Gasser's are great. Dick: on your post about being reproduced in Mexico, got me thinking. I called some Texaco collectors and other people in the gas & oil collecting. So far, nobody has seen this base but most have the same conclusion that you have, that it is a reproduction. If so, as always, Buyer Beware. As this hobby is going more to reproduction, I think it is more than ever, time to have all items dated by the manufacturers. Wheather this is a reproduction or real, it is a cool looking piece and yes, Ales, it would look good with a Texaco curb sign. If these items start showing up at shows, I would like everybody to know that these bases are reproductions and not real ones, so they don't get ripped off. What would be a fair price for this base??? Does anybody have one so we can compare it to this base? Thanks...Larry

I believe there was a post about this base on this site in the past but could not find it while searching. The conclusion at that time was that it was a fantasy piece and was never produced by Texaco.

LARRY:
I DON'T KNOW A VALUE FOR THE BASE, BUT I'LL BE HONEST WITH YOU, I'VE BEEN COLLECTING NOTHING BUT TEXACO/HAVOLINE FOR FIVE YEARS NOW. ALTHOUGH I'VE NEVER SEEN THIS BASE BEFORE I WAS SUCKERED ALSO.
ONCE AGAIN I'M SO HAPPY TO TALK ABOUT REPRODUCTIONS ON THIS SITE, BUT THEY'RE COLLECTORS WHO INSIST THIS IS GOOD FOR THE HOBBY... A BUNCH OF BS IN MY BOOK. I'LL BET THAT EVEN THE OLD TIMERS HAVE A REPRODUCTION OR TWO IN THEIR COLLECTION. THAT THEY DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT WHEN THEY BOUGHT IT. LET'S BE HONEST EVERYONE...
HAVE A GREAT WEEK ALL, DOUG

Your base is better than NO BASE for a curb sign.
As for reproduction go, WE will never be able to enforce the dateing of such [but we can try]. Not everyone can afford or find the originals to display. And without the repo's, [cans, globes, decals, signs, pumps, parts etc. etc.] there would be ALOT of PLAIN gaspumps, dens & display areas !
Besides, Seth has a GROWING family & needs the bussiness ! db
