I was given a rusty utility trailer that was left on a property with other junk after it was sold. No title, fenders or lights and completely rusted. Only reason I took it was because it had a tilt bed that would make it nice for hauling my mower. Some new lights, new tires and used fenders got me through the state safety inspection and my receipts got me a "home built" title. It's a flat bed with stake pockets but no sides.
One day a few miles from home, I noticed a pickup bedliner laying in a ravine on the side of a highway. I drove back and examined it. It was for a compact 6 foot pickup bed but my trailer was 8 foot and it had bumps for the wheelhouse tubs that my trailer didn't have. Picked it up and thought I could figure out how to use it. Just a few miles later on the same road I noticed another bedliner in a ditch on the roadside. It looked to be one made for a utility trailer like mine. Had a crack, but I figured I could reinforce it. Threw it on top of the other bedliner on my truck and I looked like the Beverly Hillbillies with 2 bedliners stacked on top of my pickup bed cover.
The 2nd bedliner fit pretty well on the trailer, but needed stakes all around to hold it. But it was too floppy on the sides and looked incomplete. So I sawed the floor of the other bedliner into 10" strips to attach to the outer sides of the inner bedliner to stiffen it and look better. Decided to use some 5/4 deck boards to beef up the sides and make them a little taller. Sandblasted and painted the metal parts of the trailer and put the parts all together.
It's a very low dollar project, but it's useful and looks kind of unique.
