Along with the can cans that I bought on Sunday I got what appears to be two original Flying A ad glasses. It looked like they would fit in my "Flying A Green" Tokheim 39 that I bought last month so I was pretty happy to get them. Only problem is that it looked like they had been painted on the back with a paint brush and some white paint. Since I have never bought ad glass before or looked closely at originals I didn't know if it was supposed to be painted or not. The one on the left is what they both looked like when I got them (some of the paint had chipped off).

I chipped some of the paint off with my fingernail and it came off pretty easy so I assumed it wasn't factory paint. I tried some of my trusty citri-strip on it and it hardly made a dent in the old (probably lead based) paint.

Ended up using a straight edge blade and then doing a final clean up with laquer thinner. Here's how it came out.

Here's the front.

Here it is installed in the Tokheim. Looks like it's going to work.

Questions for you experienced ad glass guys.

Were these painted on the back or just frosted like the one I cleaned off?

I have often seen ad glass that is painted over on the front, but why paint the back?
