Here is a globe that is on loan to me.
It was a brand of gasoline sold by the Sun Oil Companies of Canada Ltd. (NOT Sunoco, but the Canadian precursor - it's a long story...) in Southern Ontario, Canada, for about 10 years - from 1920 until 1930. Starlite was the name of a horse my grandfather owned. Starlite was sold alongside SUN Standard Gasoline, SUN Lubricating Gasoline, and Silent Chief Gasoline. All gasoline products were supplied to the Canadian Sun Companies by the McColl Frontenac refinery in Montreal. Lubricating oils were provided by HyVis, he was the Canadian importer/distributor of HyVis products. The stations also sold the MFI/Red Indian oils.
The Sun Oil Companies of Canada Ltd. were started by my great-grandfather in Brantford, Ontario, in 1885 and continued by my grandfather in Brantford, then Simcoe - and ceased operation in 1968. From 1932 until 1968, the company operated under the Miller Oil Company Ltd. name, after having been sued by Sunoco US for the name Sun. Sun US lost the lawsuit, after my grandfather was able to prove provenance of the name independently in Canada. However, he did sell the rights to the name to the Sun Oil Company in Philadelphia.

This globe is quite possibly the only one in existence. It is the property of the son of a man who was employed by my grandfather. There is only one lens - the globe was found under a workbench at the bulk station workshop in 1972, damaged, probably one step away from the scrap bin. The son converted it to a desklamp, and has kept it safe for the last 24 years. It has a tiny chip at 6 o'clock and is slightly rotated in the holder, which is metal.
He has kindly loaned it to me for photo-archival purposes, and I can't thank him enough. You da man, Paul!
I just KNEW there was one out there!

I'm glad people are enjoying seeing it. That's what it's for - to be enjoyed.
It means something to me and my family, and it was a heck of a hunt - but it has paid off in many ways. I continue to slowly put pieces of information together, and someday I hope to have a comprehensive understanding of the company history. It's through sites like this that people come to know that someone is looking for information on things like this, and provide more pieces to the puzzle.

What did we do before the Internet - and this forum?
Thanks for the replies!

I was surprised to hear that Hyvis oils was handled in Canada, I collect Hyvis and have quite a bit of info but nothing from North of the border. Have you in your research found much info about this? If so I would appreciate hearing about it. Great family story thanks...Frank

Didn't see this question about the HyVis Oil until now - sorry about that!

The Sun Oil Company of Canada was the importer/distributor of HyVis products into Canada for a time - until about 1932 or so, it looks like. Can't say for sure from when... I have a few letters from a plant manager at a HyVis plant the used to come and visit my grandfather here in Canada, and go duck hunting. He used to invite lots of suppliers/customers here to do that.
Here's a desk blotter that's dated 1925 on the back:

Thanks, I have quite a few blotters like that but from Nebraska and Calif. If you have a spare I would like to have one because of the different location. I have looked through some of my literature and there is no mention of Canada at all, It does look like Hyvis was bought out by Sinclair though, maybe there is a connection there. anyway thanks for the reply...Frank

Nice pics of that extensive HyVis collection - plus extras!
If I had more than one of these blotters, I'd send ya one! Unfortunately, this is about one quarter of my HyVis collection ( and the only one specifically marked Sun Oil Company of Simcoe)!
I also have a One U.S. Quart HyVis oil can, a "topless" One Imperial Gallon can, and 4 of those HyVis tokens - and this blotter. And it's taken me 30 years to find that much!

I have many blotters from other local service stations that feature tires, batteries, brakes, etc. - maybe I'll post those later in their own thread.

Not far off topic as far as I'm concerned!

Here's the One Imperial Gallon can. Labelled as such at the bottom.
