Hey Guys 'n Gals! It's that time of the month again -- time to share the petro relics that we've stumbled across in our recent travels, and check out what other people have found as well. If you would like to contribute to this feature, simply post the pictures here or email them directly to me and I will post them for you. Be sure to include a story or description with your subissions. If it's too close to the next installment, please note that I may hold your contribution for posting when the new FATW comes up on the 5th day of each month. Send 'em in!!
Happy trails!
Wes

Due to Thanksgiving vacation and other recent events I have not had much time to prepare for FATW this month... I've still got quite a few photo prints to scan. Luckily, Bob Drake came to the rescue and submitted some great phots he's taken of local stations. We'll start out with some of what Bob has found in Illinois and Indiana: Comments are directly from Bob: -------- The following pictures were taken in Kankakee, IL. This was a Sunoco station many years ago. I believe it closed in the early 70's Not sure what brand this station was. When I lived across the street from it over 25 years ago it was a doctor's office. This used to be a Phillips 66 station. They stopped selling gas there in 1981. Its a block down from the station pictured above and only a few blocks from the former Sunoco station.

More from Bob Drake: -------- This 3 bay porcelain station is on Court St. in Kankakee This Standard/Amoco station is next door to the porcelain station pictured above. We used to have lots of service stations around here. This old Phillips 66 station was one of the last service stations operating in Kankakee. Here's an old cottage station that has had some service bays added

Bob submitted even more, but I'm going to hold off on those until next month - gotta make the first FATW of the new year really good!
Thanks Bob!
More to come...

While driving home from Louisiana a while back, Tara and I stopped in Oil City, LA. Here, there is a neat display of some really old oil drilling equipment. I've seen a lot of outdoor oil displays in my oil-rich hometown area, but this is the oldest equipment I've come across. Check out this derrick, pump jack, and engine... Here's another old single cylinder pump engine. These ran on either "drip" from the wells, or natural gas. Not sure about this particular one. Here's the oldest oil tank I've ever seen... Likely cypress wood (common in the area). If you're ever out and about in NW Louisiana, stop by to see this stuff. Other interesting oil displays I've found are in Gladewater, TX, and Kilgore, TX. Someone wasted this excellent Independent Porcelain sign by cutting off the bottom right edege. What a shame it was in excellent condition. This Standard sign was in a small town in Kansas at a still existing bulk plant. This APCO sign was at an antique mall that was recently closed. This neat Standard sign was in the window of a car dealership in a small Missouri town. The picture of the station below the sign was directly across the street. ------------------ Scott Shipers WANTED: Quart Picture Cans Kansas City, Missouri

This Sinclair pole sign was photographed in a small Missouri town. The next two photos are of the same building. The second is a close up of a Soverign sign. ------------------ Scott Shipers WANTED: Quart Picture Cans Kansas City, Missouri

I need to use up a little vacation before Christmas and vowed to myself I would drive around my home town of Davenport Iowa and take some photos of the older buildings that once stood as gas stations. I was truly amazed how many stations we had in our town, there were literally hundreds. I tried to photograph older and more unique stations however I could have taken photo of many other stations camouflaged as car lots, florist shops, dentist offices the list goes on and on. These stations obviously take on new life. I know for sure one of the station buildings in this collection was a friend of my family’s years ago and was transformed form a Standard Station to a popcorn shop. They did a very good business; of course that was way before microwave popcorn jiffy pop. That stations now stands as a coffee shop. I would really appreciate if anyone could help me identify any or all of these stations brand names. I want to pursue getting photos of these in their original glory. I will send photos to Wes for posting…..

Took a road trip today since the weather was really nice and photographed quite a few neat items out in the wild at antique stores and still current venues. Here goes. The first two images are of a full service station. Some pumps in the wild not to far from the station. Here are a couple of current working stations. Check out the customized paint over the Amoco sign. ------------------ Scott Shipers WANTED: Quart Picture Cans Kansas City, Missouri [This message has been edited by quartcans (edited 12-09-2006).]

My guess is it's a Sinclair HC Gasoline sign but I think it is rotated like 45 degrees in the frame. Anyone else?

I definitely agree -- Sinclair HC Gasoline rotated CCW a bit... I'd go and paint 'em a nicer new sign on sheet metal and pay them to let you swap it out... Wes

And here are the long awaited photos from Greg Aust. All of these stations are great, but I especially like those cottages! Let's get started... Great shooting, by the way. What kind of camera?

Hello gang, this is my last day in Arizona, and in my travels I located this party palace that a man is building in an old converted hay barn, the outside is being done in a Mobil decor. I thought I would post a couple of pictures to share. if I screw this up, bear with me and I will get it straight. the inside is done in red and white Mobil colors, even with checkered floor.
