Well, I messed up the original title to this thread thanks to TOO MUCH COPYING AND PASTING without proper editing!! Here it is, the Gilbarco short computer pumps. Let me first mention that I really appreciate the oldgassers that participated in last month's POTM feature. We all realize that summertime is kinda slow here on oldgas for obvious reasons. Speaking for myself I must admit that my family's week long vaction along with a bunch of work-work-work has kept me from keeping my nose in "Shop Talk", unfortunately. Now to the current topic, Gilbarco is a name that we petro freaks can still feel good about because they are still in business (unlike their arch rival Tokheim). I must say that in my area of the country, southeast NC, there were probably more G&B's than any other brand. Gilbarco has always had a pretty good grip in NC, heck, in 1965 they even moved their plant and headquarters to Greensboro NC.
In the late 40's when the "short" trend began, G&B introduced the 900 series. The 1000 and 1100 series began in the mid 50's then the numbering system went wacky. The short pump chronological numbering system went something like this;
1947 - model 996 1949 - models 992 & 994 1950 - model 996 1952 - model 914 1953 - models 904 & 906 1954 - model 914 1956 - model 1002 1957 - model 1026 1958 - models 1114 & 1124 1959 - models 804 & 44 1960 - model "Salesmaker" 1961 - model 332 & S-52 1962 - models 615, 113
There were also many twins and farm pumps not listed above. I've got a model FMP that's a farm pump and as of now it's not considered very collectable but give it a few years. One day almost everything that's not considered desireable now will become Cinderellas eventually. Heck, my FMP farm pump restored in Fire Truck Red would be mighty nifty sitting next to a couple of pedal cars!
Please post any pictures, stories, sales literature, etc. related to this month's topic. Also feel free to e-mail anything to me at haninfrared@msn.com and I'll be glad to post it for you. Thanks!!!!!
Neal
