Another classic worth talking about and worshipping is the National A38 and it's short cousins. The A38 is one of the few electrics that can be glimpsed at and immediately you know what it is. To me, that's what separates the men from the boys regarding collectible pumps. It's kinda like the Wayne 60 and Bennett 541, it's an icon of electrics!
According to the highly praised and enjoyed book from Jack Sim, the National A38 evolved from it's fathers, the A-1 and BM-1. Also according to the same, there are two versions, the A-38 and the A-38-H which has a long reach hose.
The shorter versions that came out when "short was in" was the models 62, 64, 66 and 69. During the "short version" years Tokheim had purchased National and was cloning the National to Tokheim's short technology. I am not fortunate enough to own a short National but I have seen a few, the doors, skins and bases appear to be that of the Tokheim 39's and/or 300's.
Shortly thereafter the National name was swallowed and digested by Tokheim, thus eliminating it from our arena.
I think that all petro collectors will agree that although National had a limited number of electric pumps, National had style and class, making a good impact on the pumps we collectors crave today!. Speaking of class, one month we will do a feature on the National clockfaces which are monumental.
Thanks for looking and participating! Please feel free to send any pictures or scanned items to me, I will be glad to post them!
Merry Christmas to all!

Neal

took this picture this morning. "looks a little familar dosent she DOC!" LOL! i remember buying it & where i bought it & how much i paid. but i have no idea when i bought it!!? 1990??? i unloaded it right where it sits its never been moved.
i did pull the BLACK FACES OFF. dated 1948 on the tag.
I SEE MY GLOBES CROOKED AGAIN! HAHA.

i cant get a decent picture of this A-38 right now.
THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE "MINT" PUMP with (original?) paint yet.
i had my 2 boys pull the VR & put a stereo in it when they were still teens. again i dont know what year i bought it.
CDs are in racks inside the doors.
(its been pinstriped a million different colors & all over it. usually when im painting something & i have stop to answer the phone i stand there without realizing it & lean on it & stripe away with whatever color is in the brush at the time) it 'usually' gets wiped off. i see some on the side now again.
bullet hole stickers were a big deal years ago & my youngest covered the pump with them when he was young. i left them on, its my garage toons! -hit the remote & Ted Nugent blasts away!

This Flying A beauty was found stored in a bathroom at what was once Hancock Air Field in Santa Maria, California. Bill Mohr took the time to strip all of layers of paint off of the original porcelain and ad glass and shine up the stainless and this is what he found.

Man would I love to have this pump!

You guys have seen these photos before, but I wanted to participate in this segment.

Here is a photo of my Green Porcelain National A-38.

Here is a National Cut#365 (Similar to Cut#62) Before and after scraping off the old paint to expose the green porcelain.

Midwest oil , I didn't think there was a clock face A-38, do you have a close up shot of the faces, was this pump comverted to a Clock face or is it an actual model made by the factory, a Clock face A-38 would look great in my garage.

Yes this is a factory made clockface I think it was actually a model B-38. Just looked in Jack's book it is listed as a B-38. Also, Ron Scobie has new faces for them if you want to convert a computer pump. Here is a close up of the face.

A/B-38 clockface,
IF I remember correctly, it was at IG about 6yrs ago, in the Holiday INN parking lot. White Porceline body [MARTHON], with sheetmetal instead of glass lenses. Seems like asking price was $750.
