I came across this visible gas pump in Old Koloa Town, Kauai, Hawaii. I'm the guy on the right. The guy on the left wouldn't give me his name.

This older Hawaii Shell station has a non-standard look, appropriate for the area.

I am so jealous now.I just got back from Hawaii and looked everywhere for some old gas stuff. The only thing I found was a tall tokheim 39 in Haliava! Is there any collectors over there? I stayed mostly on the north shore looking for the big wave,HA HA!Your nose is definately better than mine!Steve

Hey, Jim. Enjoy your time in Hawaii! If you get to the island of Maui, stop in at the Outback restuarant at 4405 Honoapilani Highway which is north of the town of Lahaina. Cody, my son, and Emily, my daughter in law have part time jobs at night there. She goes to cosmetology classes during the day. If you have the desire to scuba or snorkel, Cody is also an instructor at 5 Star Scuba @ 667-5551, ask for Cody. He usually gives lessons in the area of the Hyatt and Sheraton also north of Lahaina. He will start you out in the swiming pool before going out in the salt water if you're just learning.
I found a several restored pumps in Lahaina at a restuarant on main drag, Harley shop and scooter/car rental shop.
As you know, there is lots to do and see on those islands. Anxious to hear how you like Kauai as we didn't get there, maybe next time.
Have a GR8 time, Jim!
Rod

We spent or first week on Kauai and moved today to Oahu. Kauai is beautiful and has only a small fraction of the population of Oahu. If you like scenery and less crowds, I'd recommend Kauai. I'll post more about my experiences later in the Non-petro forum.

We will certainly see Pearl Harbor's Arizona Memorial and the Missouri. Other stuff is being discussed as I write this. We are having a wonderful time. Especially considering it is on my brother's time-share so it is costing us nothing for first class lodging.

Hey Jim...that IS the "thatched hut" Shell station I was referencing on the phone this morning!

I'll show you a slightly older vintage photo tomorrow...

Fiberglass vs. the real deal is increasingly common - much more fire retardant and durable out in the elements.

Here's an older photo of the Lihue Shell station by author Robert Jay, c. 1992 (from "The Architecture of Charles W. Dickey: Hawaii and California" - no, this is not a Dickey project but was treated in the book an an example of the "dumbing down" of the genre):

Jim -

Ref the guy on the left in your first photo; that looks like a full-scale version of Mortimer J. Snerd (one of Edgar Bergen's dummies).

I think you may be correct, Jim. The younger guys are thinking, "Mortimer who?" Thanks for not saying the guy on the right looks like a dummy too. LOL
Bought gas twice at the thatched roof Shell. I wouldn't have guessed that we would do so much driving on a little island. Lots of scenery. Mountains, vast canyons, waterfalls, unusual tropical plants and flowering trees, not to mention the cuties on the beach. And my sister in law says "With all this scenery, he's taking pictures of a gas station?"
