Maps and matchbooks...

Has anybody seen another style/version of a Gilmore matchbook? Please show as I would love to see what else is out there.

I believe I have about 25-30 Gilmore Cubs but don't have pics of them all yet.

Here's some that I do have photos of...

Have alot of paper items like this "Red Lion Hillbillies" band poster and photo I found....

Estell Allen owned a Gilmore gas station and also had a band, The Cow Mountain Hillbillies. They were discovered by F.E. Woodman, a Gilmore publicity man, and were renamed the Red Lion Hillbillies under Gilmore sponsorship. I believe Allen is the man on the left with the spanish guitar.

Have quite a few photos too...

The majority of them are of Gilmore sponsored race cars and planes but have many station, gas/oil tanker, misc. shots as well.

Have made some memorable purchases...

Except for the photo in the top right corner, bought these and many more, off the race car owners grandson. All 6 are of the #3 Gilmore Special, ca 1933...

First off, I am not an expert/historian on Gilmore and do not pretend to be. Someone I know, already has that job. The following "history" info is debatable and is based on what I've heard, read and seen. So PLEASE chime in if you have info otherwise or even info that supports it.

A common question asked is...

"When did Gilmore Oil Co. start up?"

Matters how you look at it really. AF Gilmore Co was established 1902 and is still fully operational as of today. Sometime between 1902 and 1920, Gilmore Petroleum Co. came about. It wasn't until 1923 that Gilmore Oil Co. was established as a business under California law. It may have been around before that, I do not know for sure.

Arthur Fremont "AF" Gilmore died in 1917, I believe. His son, Earl Bell "EB" Gilmore took over the reigns then. As a young boy in the early 1900s, Earl and his buddy C.S. Beesemyer, would go up and down Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles and would sell gasoline to the lucky few that were motorists. Below are some articles/pics of the wagon he used...

Same wagon, years later fixed up for a 1929 Pioneer Day parade...

.
.
.
.

Was remuled/restored around 1940 for parades, etc...

This 1923 flyer I bought is the earliest Gilmore Oil Co. item I have or have seen. Front has a couple letters that are addressed to the Gilmore Petroleum Co. in which one of them it states the customer has exclusively used Gilmore gas for the past several years. The backside has a list of the 144 stations that were around then...

Gilmore, Those are the only Gilmore matchbooks ive ever seen. Im sure there are others, however, Ive never seen them.

PS I would be very interested in purchasing one of the Blu-Green covers with the car on it. Keep me in mind if you ever pick up a good double.

"Bear-olf-ion" is a little different than what was on the curb sign I HAD.

THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR COLLECTION.

You're right DB. Appears to have a little wolverine in the lion logo on the curb sign.

Bear-ion-olf-erine...
