Maps and matchbooks...

Has anybody seen another style/version of a Gilmore matchbook? Please show as I would love to see what else is out there.

I believe I have about 25-30 Gilmore Cubs but don't have pics of them all yet.

Here's some that I do have photos of...

Have alot of paper items like this "Red Lion Hillbillies" band poster and photo I found....

Estell Allen owned a Gilmore gas station and also had a band, The Cow Mountain Hillbillies. They were discovered by F.E. Woodman, a Gilmore publicity man, and were renamed the Red Lion Hillbillies under Gilmore sponsorship. I believe Allen is the man on the left with the spanish guitar.

Have quite a few photos too...

The majority of them are of Gilmore sponsored race cars and planes but have many station, gas/oil tanker, misc. shots as well.

Have made some memorable purchases...

Except for the photo in the top right corner, bought these and many more, off the race car owners grandson. All 6 are of the #3 Gilmore Special, ca 1933...

First off, I am not an expert/historian on Gilmore and do not pretend to be. Someone I know, already has that job. The following "history" info is debatable and is based on what I've heard, read and seen. So PLEASE chime in if you have info otherwise or even info that supports it.

A common question asked is...

"When did Gilmore Oil Co. start up?"

Matters how you look at it really. AF Gilmore Co was established 1902 and is still fully operational as of today. Sometime between 1902 and 1920, Gilmore Petroleum Co. came about. It wasn't until 1923 that Gilmore Oil Co. was established as a business under California law. It may have been around before that, I do not know for sure.

Arthur Fremont "AF" Gilmore died in 1917, I believe. His son, Earl Bell "EB" Gilmore took over the reigns then. As a young boy in the early 1900s, Earl and his buddy C.S. Beesemyer, would go up and down Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles and would sell gasoline to the lucky few that were motorists. Below are some articles/pics of the wagon he used...

Same wagon, years later fixed up for a 1929 Pioneer Day parade...

.
.
.
.

Was remuled/restored around 1940 for parades, etc...

This 1923 flyer I bought is the earliest Gilmore Oil Co. item I have or have seen. Front has a couple letters that are addressed to the Gilmore Petroleum Co. in which one of them it states the customer has exclusively used Gilmore gas for the past several years. The backside has a list of the 144 stations that were around then...

Gilmore, Those are the only Gilmore matchbooks ive ever seen. Im sure there are others, however, Ive never seen them.

PS I would be very interested in purchasing one of the Blu-Green covers with the car on it. Keep me in mind if you ever pick up a good double.

Some magazine covers and race program ads, cover art and back ads...

Who can spot the error on one of the program covers? It is a RARE program and the first to have this version of cover art.

Thought I'd share this story...

Here is an article about one lucky man, Jimmy Dunham, who raced as a mechanic one time at the 1935 Indy 500, and won with Kelly Petillo in the #5 Gilmore Speedway Spcl. Then returned to Indy 70 years later, blessesd Dan Wheldons car as the would be winner and that car actually won. He passed away at the age of 96 not to long ago...

Prewar Kirkpatrick photo I found of the winning car...

1958 Aurora plastics store display of the 1935 Indianapolis model and kit. Was told there may have been a sign, card or a base that was involved. Aurora hired professional modelers to assemble and paint them up for stores to display...

Gilmore, thanks a bunch for the picture. I have only seen several of them, however, I have never had the oppurtunity to buy one. I have over 700 gas/oil/automotive matchcovers in my collection, majority of them early, and I would love to add one of those. Thanks again, gmstuff

Thanks for sharing those photos DB. I have seen some other pics of of that/his collection. Those pics show some new things though I believe. All nice eye candy for sure!!! Nice trophy, of Yosemite Run is it?, and "Give Me Gilmore" can, never seen that one before. An Austrailian or New Zealand can right?

Good job all who guessed lower left corner front cover. No spell check back then but they did have editor in chief, editors, etc... and a dictionary. The solution was to place a white box with correct spelling in black, over MIGET error.

Gilmore Paddle Sign

Not sure what this was. Some speculation was it may have been attached to a microphone, but who knows.

Some new photos I've recently purchased...

1933 photo of a kid showing off his scale model he built of the #1 RED LION SPECIAL, driven by Ernie "the Blonde Terror" Triplett. Unfortunately it was stored with photos that had artcles glued on the backs of most of them (newspaper photo archives). It has some discoloration on image.

These three shots of Kelly Petillo in Gilmore cars, arrived the other day....

The bottom two are shots taken at the 1935 Indy 500, before and after the race. I posted another photo I have of him from the 1935 Indy on an earlier page.

Unfortunately, sometimes these old newspaper photos are painted over/marked up/cropped for layouts/article images.

In the top photo, he is holding his lucky pair of baby shoes he ties to the steering wheel. The shoes are painted over though. This photo was used and edited a couple times. Both articles are glued on back of photo.

Anybody know of a way to SAFELY remove the paint from old photos, without harming them?

More new goodies...

Photo of two stripped down '33-34 Ford roadsters taking off at the start of the 1934 Gilmore Gold Trophy 250 mile road race that was held at Mines Field in LA, CA. Of the 26 cars entered, 22 were Ford V8s. Ford cars finished first through 10th...

Also purchased this Gilmore ad about the race...
