I wanted to share with everyone a recent find I acquired for my Texaco filling station I am building. If anyone has any information about this curb sign or its age, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Larry

Larry: Nice find. I am thinking 30s or 40s, but I am not sure. I have seen a Texaco sign that says "Certified Lubrication" from 1932. Someone will be along that knows for sure.

Larry:

My reference shows a twin sister to that sign in use in the 1930's. Same shape, same base - different lettering on the sign itself.

Later . . .

I believe I've seen either one or two different Texaco sign versions the same shape, other than yours. One was a "Clean, Clear, Golden" and the other was I believe similar to yours but with more wording? In any case, there was definitely more than one sign that fit that frame.

Here's another sign that would have fit in that frame I bet...

Those signs were given to the Texaco dealers that used exclusive Texaco products in their service bays and stations. The sign was then set out by the road so that when you went by you knew they used only their own products.

Thanks to everyone who posted a reply to my curb sign. It was some very interesting discussions. Here is some info I have found on the sign: In the Texaco Collectibles book by Robert W.D. Ball, acknowledgements page there is a photo of the curb sign. On page 22, same book, there is one of the same curb sign plus the clean, clear motor oil. In the A Tour with Texaco book, by Rick Pease, page 35, there is a photo of the sign with Certified in script writing on a angle. In the Texaco Collectors Guide by Benjamin and Henderson, page 52, same base as mine, only the sign is the Texaco motor oil, clean, clear gold. All of the signs were 30" x 30" with 45 degree angles. Shown here is a close up photo of the curb sign base I have. Thanks again, Larry
