This is a foreign looking oddball tin piece. It is 4.75" round, single sided, with a slight lip all the way around. Looks to be the Ethyl logo in a language I can't identify. Anyone have any info on the sign or the language written on it? Thanks

I think it is Arabic but has nothing to do with petro...maybe a wax or polish of some kind....probably a mirror on the other side at one time...mm
Wanted early tin litho signage. petro, farm, auto, etc.

I believe it is correct that this could be from Belgium. French is used there and this loosely translates to "furniture polish" in French.

Thanks for the info so far. Looks like they ripped off the Ethyl logo.

MAYBE IT WAS A POLISH MADE BY THE ETHYL CORP. REMEMBER HOW MANY PRODUCTS WERE OFFERED BY MOST OIL COMPANIES THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO THE THE AUTOMOBILE. ETHYL OVERSEAS MAY'VE BEEN DIFFERENT FROM U.S.A. THEREFORE USING THEIR LOGO SUBLIMINALLY WITHIN THIS LABEL OR ADVERTISEMENT. JMOHO.

What do you mean "a lip all the way around it"? Could it be black shoe polish?

I seen that and was wondering about it also. Thought about getting it just because of how neat it was.

Translated it is "metal polish". Here is a container that the company used for their polish: I think you have quite a find, not necessarily from a Petroliana perspective, but mainly interest from black memorabilia collectors. See article about black memorabilia: http://www.ferris.edu/jimcrow/newforms/ [This message has been edited by chadhaas (edited 03-19-2007).]
