I found this old Mobil sign on a wall at a guys shop and I believe he will sell it to me but he wants ME to price it! I'm at a loss as I've never seen this sign before and I don't know how old it is. Its been on this same wall for at least 40 years and probably a lot longer. We couldn't nail down the age but we spent a lot of time together and I believe he will let it go if I bid high enough(as always). My problem is coming up with a number thats fair to both of us! Can anyone help with info on the sign or guesstimates of its worth? Its a framed and painted tin sin and the mark on the left is a scratch. That seems to be the only real damage! Thanks

Good looking sign. Sorry I have no info on age or value.
I do believe in providing a good home to a good sign. If you are looking at reselling the sign then give him a fair price. But, if you are looking at hanging that sign and enjoying it for years and years then offer him what you can afford. I have been given some awesome signs by my friends and people I did not know simply because I showed an interest. Maybe he won't give it to you but if you tell him honestly what you can afford, it might go your way. I have made some good friends this way and I have been blessed to be able to return the favor to some of my friends. If I know one of my signs will be appreciated by it's new owner I would rather give it than sell it. Good luck,
Mike

I don't know if it helps at all ? I use to have a couple Havoline signs 4' X 8' painted metal with the same kind of frame work. They were from the twenties and the manufacture was from Ohio I believe. There might be something on the backside.

Hello,
Socony and Vacuum merged in 1931, so that will give us the oldest possible date.
Signs using this "shared" L is generally from the 30s and the font with open a is not used after WWII(with a few exeptions). Since the sign is in such a good shape, I would guess that it was never hung outside, or at least for a very short time.
With the possible date (GS-741) I would say late 30's, possibly very early 40's, but definitely pre WWII.

I would say that number dates it to 1941. Seems right for this sign.

As far as making an offer for the sign, hard to say but if it were me I would start at 350-400 and go from there just based on pictures. Hard to say without seeing it in person. I am sure it would clean up real nice and thus may be able to be worth a little more. Your going to want to look at the backside of the sign as well. Any damage, bends, rust, will affect value greatly. Is there damage in the lower right hand corner? Looks to have some dents and creases in it as well.

It's worth whatever someone will pay for it. What are the dimensions on it? Looks like a nice sized sign. You can look at it this way, it's better than putting money in the stock market. I am not sure if this a rare Mobil piece or not.

If it's a piece you really want don't be afraid to offer a little more than what you think it may be worth. It's not going to go down in value. And he may have had offers in the past.

The above comments are just my two pennies and take it for what its worth. Good luck and keep us updated.

It sounds like the seller already has a price in mind.
He should just state what he wants for it,instead of making you jump through hoops.

Hey the sign is 3ft x 9ft. I have one just like it hanging in my basement. It is not in as good condition as the one you found. I gave $200 for it about 2 years ago. I would go as $400-$450 for that one if that one scratch is all of the major damage it has.
