WELCOME TO THE SECOND (#2) EDITION OF M.O.T.M. (OR) "MAP OF THE MONTH."
THIS MONTH'S FEATURE WILL BE COVERING SERVICE STATION MAPS FROM THE GULF OIL COMPANY. ALSO KNOWN AS "SIGN OF THE ORANGE DISC." GULF HAS BEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE
ALL OVER MY AREA IN THE ATLANTIC NORTHEAST AROUND THE CORNER OR JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE IN THE NORTH, SOUTH OR MIDDLE STATES.
NOT SURE OF THE GULF GAS STATION MARKETING AREA TODAY, BUT THEY ARE PRETTY COMMON HERE.

IN 1915 GULF OIL CO. WAS THE FIRST TO ISSUE A STANDARD AREA ROAD MAP. MUST'VE BEEN PRETTY SIMPLE AS ROADWAYS WERE STILL IN THEIR INFANCY. IMAGINE WHAT AN ORIGINAL
FROM THEN MIGHT BE WORTH! WE'RE TALKING 90 YEARS AGO! I HAVE A FAIRLY GOOD SELECTION OF GULF MAPS AND TOURGUIDES TO SHOW, BUT LIKE SINCLAIR MOTM LAST MONTH WE NEED COMMUNITY POSTINGS FROM EVERYBODY WHO CAN HELP WITH THE GULF ROADMAP OF THE MONTH THREAD.

SO DIG OUT YOUR GULF ROADMAPS AND GET THEM ON. I KNOW ALOT OF THESE AREN'T DATED, BUT ONE CAN PRETTY MUCH GUESS AN APPROX AGE
BY LOOKING AT THE CARS AND GRAPHICS ON EACH MAP.

THANKS!

DOC @ THE AMERICAN GARAGES

DATING EARLY GULF MAPS 1914-1929

Collectiable Gulf maps are available from 1914 to 1975 with the exception of 1943. Information taken from January 1995 "Check The Oil" magazine from an article by Dave Leach.

1914: These maps are copyright W. Akin and were mailed to customers from the newly built Gulf stations

1915-1916: These had similar covers with the 1916 version listing available map titles on the back panel. Inside the map there is no comparison. Surrounding the map in the 1915 series is a colorful border of country roads and cars. The rendering of oil flowing from a container is superb. From 1915 to 1921, the state and regional maps were published by the Automobile Blue Book Publishing Company. The 1915-1916 issues included the copyright date on the map border. Unfortunately, some issues did not and some of later issue still contained the 1916 dating.

Early Gulf maps all had a similar cover design with a speeding convertible with trees, clouds and an orange Gulf disc as the sun.

1916: Day and Weekend Tours. Supreme Auto Oil box-single line under "Supreme Auto Oil". "carbon" is the only word on the last line in the box.
1917: Double lines 1/8 inch apart inderline the words "Supreme Auto Oil". Inside ad panel contains "The Carbon Theory Exploded". Back panel has "That Good Gulf Gasoline".
1918: Double lines spaced 1/16 inch apart under "Supreme Auto Oil". The last text line in the box is "free carbon".
1919: "Carbon Theory" ad replaced by "Supreme Auto Oil" ad box suggests every 1500 miles drain crankcase.
1920: Cloud drawing is slightly different box around "Supreme Auto Oil" on cover now has double line border ads on inside and a back containing different text from 1919.
1921: Oil change at 1000 miles ad text change.
1922: "Blazed Trails in...." title box. First Rand McNally issue for Gulf. Double orange lined border around title box and oil change box.
1923: Oil change every 500 to 1000 miles. Last cover to have orange sky.
1924: Gulf logo first appears on cover. Gulf milepost marker appears on cover. "Supreme Auto Oil" box is gone.
1925: "Oil change" box has orange and blue border scene more similar to 1923 map than 1924. Ad panels have "We Offer Service".
1926: "Blazed Trails" removed from title box. "Map No...." added. The inside or back panel contains a nice drawing of a station and "No-Nox" pump.
1927: Car has top up, title border is wide solid orange. Louisville added as district office. Gousha map with "A" date code
1928: Car is orange with pale orange top title box shaded in light orange with darker border. Gousha "B" code appears.
1929: Date appears on cover.

Maps after 1929 no longer used the "car by the trees" design.

Here is a Gulf map in my collection. I've always loved this one as it shows the National Duplex pump. Now, from looking at all the other maps, it appears the duplex was a favorite of the Gulf Company.

Not a lot of Gulf stuff in my collection, but here are a couple of maps along with a Credit Card front and back from the same period. Looks like they had a deal going with Holiday Inn.

Okay, I lied!

Found these two Canadian Gulf maps and this trip planner with a convenient list of where to stop for Gulf gas along the way.
