3 piece glass globes

On many of my 3 piece globes there was caulking or sealant on the perimeter of the lenses. When removing the lenses for cleaning,etc., the caulking would fall out due to its age . My question is what type of material can be used to replace this caulking without harming the painted surface on the rear of the lens ?
