: WI have aquired a Gilbarco model 97-1 clock face pump and would like any information on this pump. When were these pumps in service and what oil companies would have used them? I intend to restore the pump but want to keep it as authentic as possiable. Will removing the pump and motor assy. affect value? Any parts out there? Thanks .....Will

William, these pumps were introduced around 1938. Standard of NJ owned
Gilbarco at that time and the Standard companies were the heavest users of
this pump. However, virtually all companies, except Gulf, used a Gilbarco at
one time or another. There does not seem to be a consesus as to whether or
not to leave the pump mechanism in place. Arguments for getting rid of it
are to keep you from getting hernias when you move it and getting rid of the
gas smell. Others argue that guting the pump reduces it to a shell and by
doing so you are not truly preserving the pump for this and future
generations. I believe that if you can, restore the internals. Gilbarcos are
popular pumps and there are a wide variety of parts available for the later
models. Some of these should be appropriate for your pump. See the list of
suppliers on this web site. Steve
