Jen, when gas was first sold the gas pumps were "blind". That is, they were solid cast iron pumps that counted the amount of gallons put into your car - just like today. Customers did not trust the counters on the pumps so the visable pump was introduced. Having a large glass cylinder the motto was wysiwyg.
These "visables" had probably been installed about a week when some marketeer figured out the they could tint their gas a different color from the competition and thereby claim it was better. Almost all producers used one color or another and Gilmore's Blu-green was famous on the west coast. A comprehensive list would be extensive and beyond the scope here. But no matter what the color it all smelled like gas. No Channel # 5.
This situation was common well into the 60's and 70's and is occasionally done today. Almost all undyed gas is clear in color so check it out the next time you fill up. Steve
