I had wondered about colored gasoline and I talked to some old timers. I was told that for example, gasoline sold for use in farm tractors was untaxed and untaxed gasoline was tinted with coloring. Some farmers had their own tanks and a pump and would have gasoline delivered to their farms. Since the farm gas was untaxed it was way cheaper than gas bought for passenger cars. However, it must be tempting to put this cheap farm gas in your car or pickup and so the authorities dictated farm gas would be tinted. This same tinted gas was also sold at rural service stations. If one were to get caught using untaxed and tinted farm gas in a regular passenger car, that would be big trouble!
