I use an anti-rust converter on the areas of the sign that have damage. I then coat the entire sign with a clear coat.

The only disadvantage to using the clear coat is that it can yellow over time (I believe Scott Benjamin (or someone)has an article on the web referring to this) - anyway, I had just bought an old Texaco sign right before I read that, and the previous owner had clear coated it... sure enough, within the next year or two, it yellowed a pretty good bit... I've never had any problems with the wax though.
