Bill, I have a few tips that I use on visibles I restore, maybe some will work well for you.
1) I like to use the 15" metal globe bodies and lenses.
time passages carries a 15" Flying Chicken Wing globe that is authentic to the early era. It also has a matching water base decal. But.... these globes are more pricey than the 13 1/2's and the coloration is different than the common flying a globes.
2)I do not return the pump to working condition. I free the pump mechanism so that it will move and crank.
I then take the entire piping mechanism and powder coat it either black or silver. I usually do the internals in black and the external piping and rods in the cylinder in silver. Powder coat the handle in black also. Powder coating is much more durable than catalyzed urethane or enamel.
3)Commonly, coloration in decals and globes will not match. Pick one or the other to use as your paint target. Use the fleet color guide form PPG or Dupont and select the color that most closely matches. There are enough standard colors available to hit very close without custom tinting paint.
4)I use white 3/4 cloth hose although 1" is correct.
New underwiter and id tags are some of the best appearance detailing items you can put on the skin portion. Repro curved unleaded signs are available or you can bend repros by sandwiching them in light cardboard and running them through a small hand sheetmetal roller.
