Chris, I have had the most success doing exactly what you described. I had two pumps from Iowa gas shipped using an independent freight broker. He put them up front on a truck coming to LA and I met the trucker at one of his drops. Unfortunately it is difficult to do when you are 1000 miles away. It is also imperative the seller on the other end know what he is doing. Unrestored pumps only need to be bolted securely to a pallet with the glass removed to be shipped. If the seller is willing to do that, it saves a tremendous amount over calling a professional crater.
